I once read that wpengine.com was really fast, but I've not tried it myself.

Could you provide some more information on your site? Just stating that it is Wordpress doesn't really help much..

It's about a dozen sites. Low traffic (less than 100 combined visitors per day). Mostly use WP thesis or WooThemes. I have 2-3 important sites used to market my digital marketing consulting services. End goal would be make those sites run faster (I've tried on-page optimization and installing speed-enhancing plugins).

You should be fine with a web host that doesn't overload their servers. I'd recommend using a web host that uses LiteSpeed & would also recommend properly optimizing your sites & possibly using a CDN such as CloudFlare.

Hate to break it to everyone though, "Wordpress Hosting" is merely a gimmick as is "unlimited".

I've been using Hostgator for several years and I am satisfied with them. From what I have heard Bluehost is also good.

Take a look at the recommendations from WordPress.org as well

That assumption is likely incorrect. Are you basing that on any facts? Or are you just posting out your .. just to get your count up?

Googling for reviews will get you nothing but hundreds of affiliate links on review sites.

Why wouldn't they link to other companies that provide much better services like MDD, StableHost, HawkHost etc? These places only link to the highest paying affiliates.

            You also are wrong.

To get the answer to why, you'd have to ask Mark Jaquith, or Matt Mullenweg.

While you are at it, see if they will tell you why they don't have any affiliate links to the hosts they recommend.

              BlueHost:
What's amazing is that for BlueHost the link goes here: h**p://www.bluehost.com/cgi/info/wordpress

Which nowhere on their site can you find this link. So yes, it's being tracked & guarantee you they're getting a kickback.

Dreamhost: h**p://dreamhost.com/wordpress-695/ <---- Tracked as well

              So no, "you're" wrong.

Laughing Squid doesn't appear to be using any sort of tracking, but I'm sure there's something worked out there.

Follow the URL to its desitnation & you'll see it gets run through CGI first.

Their main wordpress page is: ht*p://www.bluehost.com/wordpress

This: ht*p://www.bluehost.com/cgi/info/wordpress - is being tracked through cgi.

EDIT: Also, if you click on the DreamHost linke once, the affiliate page won't be directred anymore since you've got a cookie.

Link: ht*p://dreamhost.com/wordpress-695/ - it's being converted from DreamHosts side using a source - not from Wordpress.org using an affiliate link.

                    Kingfish85 is right, folks.

Before, I was just using wget to test for affiliate links. The dreamhost link, like the laughingsquid one, didn't show any obvious sign that they were cloaked, so I didn't even bother with them.

Using what Kingfish85 said, I decided to check for myself.

I created a new Firefox profile. Then I installed the Live HTTP Headers plugin. And I went to the Wordpress Hosting recommendations page.

I clicked the Dreamhost link, and voila! Dreamhost referral cookies are being set!

Here's the relevant Live HTTP Headers output:

                    HTML Code:
                    ----------------------------------------------------------

                    ----------------------------------------------------------

When the LaughingSquid link is clicked, Live HTTP Headers and other similar programs don't show any obvious signs of referral tracking. That's not to say they aren't tracking referalls. They could be doing it by simply collecting referral data like ip addresses, referring site, browser fingerprint, etc... and keeping tabs on how many customers Wordpress.org is sending.

None of this is sinister. WP mentions that they get referral commissions. I just think a lot of people might think these hosting companies are chosen solely based on performance.

Also, I haven't used LaughingSquid, but I've used both Dreamhost and Bluehost. I thought Dreamhost was pretty bottom of the barrel in terms of performance. I'm talking about their database performance. It was awful! It's been a while though, so maybe they've fixed things now. Bluehost was pretty average. I guess what I want to say is that these hosts probably aren't listed in order of performance.

In fact, Wordpress lists the criteria they use to recommend hosts on that page. Actual performance of the hosting is not listed:

Listing is completely arbitrary, but includes criteria like: contributions to WordPress.org, size of customer base, ease of WP auto-install and auto-upgrades, bundling sane themes and plugins, avoiding GPL violations, design, tone, presence in forums, historical perception, using the correct logo, capitalizing WordPress correctly, not blaming us if you have a security issue, and up-to-date system software.
(It's funny how they say the listings are completely arbitrary, but then they go on to list the criteria that they use to determine whether or not hosts are listed )

Except for an occasional slowdown, Bluehost has been my choice. Their service, online chat or phone, is outstanding and available 24x7

If you want top-notch go for wp-engine. No doubt on that. Their support is fantastic and the handle all the performance issue for you.

    They are worth their price.

Good WP hosting is available from webintellects and a2hosting companies.
They support a lot of useful scripts on their servers which work with no glitches.

I'm a big fan of TigerTech for WP. Same hosting Matt Cutts uses for his personal blog. They host lots of other big WP sites as well.

    Easy.
Pick browser you don't use (mine is Flock, a Firefox clone). Firefox clones are best for this.
    Flush browser.
    Visit sites.
    Check cookies in browser.
    Ta-da! You have affiliates cookies!

Affiliates aren't bad, when the advice is good and honest.
When the "best" whatever has paid to be best, or only the top payers are suggested, the affiliate's suggestion is complete BS.

    HI,
According to my experience choose the hosting service according to your requirement. No use of paying $18 to $29 or even more if your number of page views is very less like 10,000 to 30,000 . let's do a calculation. if your site page views is 10,000 per month then you are getting 300 to 400 page views daily. So, if your site comes in this category no need to invest big money on hosting . Go for a hosting provider like hostagtor, bluehost and dreamhost. But if you are getting minimum 10,000 page views everyday then i am sure you need service provider like wp-engine .

Do research and keep an Eagle's eye on your website traffic. When you want and what type of service you want.

Have fun and keep smiling .

A lot of people do just that, but getting a VPS is no guarantee that performance would be better. A VPS isn't necessarily going to perform better just because it's a VPS.

I can sell you a VPS that's deployed from my laptop. And I'm pretty sure you won't be happy with the performance.

The same goes for dedicated servers. A lot of people think getting a dedicated server necessarily means that they are going to get great performance. What if the dedicated server is in a crappy data center and has a slow hard drive, a slow processor, and very little RAM?

The only way to really know is to test things. I've had shared hosting that's performed better than some VPS and some VPS that have performed better than some dedicated servers, but none of those types of hosting necessarily guarantees any kind of performance.

But to those who are interested, I am selling VPS hosting that is provisioned on an old laptop I have running on a WiFi connection in my garage. PM me if interested.

Yep... "Get a VPS! You have no knowledge on how to run a server or what a VPS involves, but still, get a VPS!".

        Usual WF trash.
