Is Hostgator working ok?

Hello Everyone,

I want to know whether Hostgator is working ok today. Regarding my sites, hostgator is telling me that they are transferring the data in a new hardware and my sites will resume after the transfer completes. My question is how long this transfer might take and I have asked this question from Hostgator but I did not get any response yet.

Is there anyone who knows what exactly is going and how soon we can start working on our sites? Please help.

Thank You

    Hi

So far I haven't receive such an email.

Usually if there are such transfers on the frontend a website visitor wouldn't notice the difference.

Hostgator is a good choice for normal website, tranfer process may need from 4 to 6 hours to finish.

Hostgator was sold to EIG group several months ago, and the new owner is in the process of transferring all the servers away from the servers at the Planet/Softlayer to their own servers in Utah. (with something like 8,000,000 domains there's got to be a lot of servers to migrate and no telling how long it's all going to take) This caused major problems for many customers due to some kind of failure at the beginning of this month, but it now appears to be back to something like normal, whatever that is.

You might have some interruption, but it shouldn't last too long.

I would never ever host anything at Godaddy, if you begin to consider them search the discussions here on Warrior before you go there. They use a proprietary front end instead of cpanel and many things that work everywhere else don't work at nodaddy.

I was having issues with Bluehost which forced me to make a switch. In the couple days trying to get set up with hostgator they seemed to be having the same issues.. They had a pre-recorded message when i called in that they were awair of the technical difficulties. It would take forever to do anything with support.

For this reason I decided to shop, and found that they were doing exactly what were saying about moving away from Soft Layer. I researched Softlayer and moved our Server over there.

I strongley reccomend Softlayer, there support is awesome. you can talk to a tech within minutes, and they seem to be much more knowledgable then host gator.

I couldn't be happier with our transfer to softlayer.

SoftLayer is a great company however, they were also bought out by IBM recently & IBM doesn't exactly cater to the consumer market. I'm assuming they bought SoftLayer for their automation software since it would probably be cheaper to buy them vs building it from the ground up. I don't know what the future holds for SoftLayer either though..

Funny thing though, all the people that had problems with BlueHost's super slow Wordpress sites & anything else that used mySQL, and jumped ship to HostGator are in for a nasty surprise - they're literally being moved right back.

I have had an awesome experience with softlayer so far. hope it stays that way.

Bluehost though pissed me off, i was having multiple problems with them, but the one that blew my top is when I had 2 different website go down a week apart. Both times it just looked like a bunch of programming code. As I was calling support to fix my website. I started looking at the code. As I was on the phone I noticed in the code was my user name and password for my cpanel.. Everything was exposed to the world to see.

They tried to tell me it was a word press issue, even though 1 of my sites was not wordpress. Then they tried to tell me it was the user name and password for that website so it cant be a blue host issue. That didn't sit well with me since i'm the one that knew our password for the c panel, and the site was one our affiliates.. So unless by some miracle our user names and passwords were the same, It was definitely my Cpanel information for anyone that knew what they were doing.

So, I would stay away from BLuehost.. I got the same vibe when I was setting up with Hostgator that their customer support was a mess, so I went with Softlayer.

I have no idea why people still suggest that in 2013. It's terrible. It's not even the same "Hostgator" anymore, not since summer 2012, and is nothing more than an EIG brand now. There are better hosts.

They're still telling people this!?!? New old hardware packed to the brim, which is why everyone's complaining about performance after they move. Those that say they haven't been affected yet have not been moved yet.

SoftLayer is probably 100 times better, but more expensive. Remember, EIG is equity owned and maximizing profits a high as possible is priority number one. There's a reason why Brent chose SoftLayer when HG went to TX from Florida...

Then you likely don't monitor your sites and servers every 3-5 minutes, 24/7/365.

You could only blame the user (ie, local config issues) if it he was the only one having issues, and the company was known to be good. However, there's thousands of complaints online, and the complaints are legitimate. If you don't pay attention, I'm sure it does seem fine. But if you test it, and expect quality load times, you know it's rather lousy.

HG is just not a good company anymore. There are better ones.

      Hostgator = Bluehost = 50+ other brands = EIG = avoid them

Well, they did the migration for my eCommerce site yesterday and a total DISASTER! My site has been down for 20 hours and counting......

Over a year ago I moved my ecommerce site to Hostgator because of your good reputation. During that time I experienced excellent performance and reliability that I would expect from a large hosting company. However, your migration to a new data center has been a shockingly incompetent disaster. Yesterday (19 hours ago), at about 4:30 est my site went down and as of now is still down. Not only is that alarming but even worse, tech support informs me no one is working on the issue yet. I have called tech support three times now and no one seems to know what the problem is. Even worse I was just told they don't know if they will be able to get my site back up??? I was also told they did NOT do a backup immediately prior to the migration... WHAT ?? SO many questions...... As a web consultant it is unfathomable that a competent "fallback" plan would NOT have been put in place for such a major migration project. I was also told they don't know if the old server is still available. WHAT? How could you do a migration and NOT have complete access to the old server until ALL the sites have been successfully moved and tested ?? This is what you would expect from a low end, one man operation hosting service from some guys bedroom. Not Hostgator...... UNBELIEVABLE !!!
