admin.php not working -VorteX47 HELP

Hi,

I've seen this thread somewhere but have not found a direct solution
and cannot reply a post to the thread because I'm new to the forum.

Anyway, --I'm using Hostgator and the admin.php is not working--I changed all the folders and files to "777"--I'm a newbie so it's kinda hard
to know what's going on. I appreciate the help.

Also, in my other folders, I'm using Wordpress and I'm not sure if that is complicating the problem. Although the "Acne" folder is a separate folder of the domain name.

Thanks,

Ken

Need more information before anyone can even begin to help you with this. What script are you trying to use with HostGator (admin.php doesn't really narrow it down much)? What error are you getting?

One tip, especially if you're getting a 500 (Internal Server Error).. on HostGator, you should not have any file or directory permissions set to 777. Because of the way their servers are configured, it's absolutely not necessary to use such "wide open" permissions under any circumstances and in most cases HostGator will not allow your scripts to run with those permissions.

      Steven,

Thanks! What I did was to send my problem directly to Hostgator (also learned that Live Chat Support is a lot better than phone calls).
They fixed it and said some of of the "permissions" were screwed up (I'm guilty). It is running now.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

      Cheers,
      KenJoe

Ive had loads of problems with HG before, so many limitations for some of my scripts on their hosting due to only allowing 755 also and their support is usually ok but everytime I submit a ticket to add 777 permissions they never reply although they say they can in chat :S

That's not in any way a limitation. Your scripts that would normally require 777 permissions will run perfectly fine without them on HostGator.

Among the things I have installed on my HostGator accounts, with no problems and without 777 permissions..

WordPress: I can edit my theme through the admin dashboard without 777 permissions, the script can write to them with no problems. I can install, update and edit plugins through the admin dashboard without 777 permissions, the script can write to them with no problems.

Several Butterfly Marketing sites (only one is "live" so far): I installed the script (needs write access to one file) without 777 permissions. I can edit my templates through the admin panel without 777 permissions. I can create pages and create "download protect" php files through the admin panel without 777 permissions. Again, the script can write to these files with no problems.

Where's the limitation? The fact that HostGator refuses to allow you to use wide-open permissions that are not only unnecessary on their servers, but would put your files at risk if they were allowed? The only way I could see HostGator's setup being a problem is if you're using a very poorly written script that "thinks" it needs 777 permissions when it really doesn't and refuses to run without them.

Edit: Personally, being security conscious and also somewhat lazy.. after hosting with HostGator I absolutely refuse to host with anyone who doesn't uses PHPSuExec. Not needing to fool around with file permissions makes script installation a lot faster, and getting rid of the wide-open 777 permissions makes my sites a lot more secure than they used to be at my old host.

Thanks Steven, your words have just calmed me after I spent all this afternoon uploading Butterfly Marketing 2, changing specified permissions to 777, and getting the 500 Internal Server every time I tried to install. I am on Hostgator, and was getting quite frustrated...

Having read your post, I didn't alter any of the permissions this time, but it hasn't worked again - which was the one file you have to alter permissions for please?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

E2A: after a bit more reading on the problem, I discovered that if you set all the folders and files to 755 that the install video says to set to 777, the install works happily. It's to do with Hostgator being extra safe apparently
