Hosting Plan Hostgator Baby Plan

28 replies
Hello,

I am having problem with my sites. My hosting plan on Hostgator is baby Plan but mostly I get such errors:

Error establishing a database connection

Few days before when I deleted some posts from back end and then sites were working. But now again they are stopped working.

I need to upgrade my hosting or there is any way to resolve this?

is it server problem?

Best Regards.

    That error suggests that you are not connecting to the database. This shouldn't have anything to do with your hosting plan, unless your host does not provide php. Check your connection most likely in a config file.

    It could be a server problem or a script problem. Speak to their support team and hope for a fast/helpful reply

    Error establishing a database connection
    This is almost indefinitely a Wordpress issue. You need to check your information inside the wp-config.php file to be sure the correct database, username & password is correct or that it even exists. I'd recommend contacting their support department if you're unsure what to do.

    I received the below email:

    HostGator
    Ticket: CFT-25417144 - TOS/MySQL : gator2020.hostgator.com : whacky
    Hello,

    This message is to advise you of a temporary block placed on your database. The database was found to be consuming an inordinate amount of processor time, to the point of degrading overall system performance. While we do limit each account to no more than 25% of a system's CPU in our terms of service, we do not actively disable accounts until they greatly exceed that number, which is what happened in this case. Requests to this database may become degraded by limiting the maximum number of queries or connections for a limited amount of time, or if there are sustained issues, ultimately we may be forced to block access to this database until the issue has been resolved.

    Resolving this situation may be as simple as adding additional indexes to your database, optimizing the queries used, or something equally easy. If not, it may simply be a matter of moving this database to dedicated services, as it may have outgrown a shared environment.

    If you believe you have a solution to this overuse, we are happy to discuss the situation with you and possibly reinstate the database on the server. Otherwise, we will be happy to assist you with the upgrade process if a dedicated server is the most appropriate solution. Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you shortly.

    ~~~
    Excessive MySQL activity is caused by (angel) a long-running process that locks a table, causing other queries to back up, (beer) a query that is not optimized ][example: select all from ... and involving a large or complex query], (coffee) huge table copies/maintenance during peak hours.
    NOTE:, the following are just possible fixes or suggestions, and are not endorsed or supported by HostGator. They are included in the hope that they may apply to your situation, and/or help you reduce the amount of resources your SQL queries consume. As always, it's best to backup any data before making any changes or adjustments.
    First and foremost, you may need to optimize your tables. The frequency depends on the size and usage of the database, but most databases would benefit from doing something like this on a yearly basis: a) Enter your phpMyAdmin/MySQL control panel. Click on the database (not the table, the database name), and on the right hand column your tables should be listed. Scroll down till you see the .Check all. link. Click on that link, make sure all database tables are checked and then from the drop-down next to it, and carefully select .Optimize table..
    Additionally, adding indexes to your table(s) may improve performance. If you're not sure what you're doing, it's best not to modify any table; caution is recommended. There are various articles (Four Ways to Optimize Your MySQL Database - Developer.com - Developer.com and Optimizing MySQL: Queries and Indexes — DatabaseJournal.com). It may be best to Google for something like [Your Software Name] MySQL indexes for suggestions.
    If you reply back to this with your IP address (Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator) we will be more than happy to go ahead enable HTTP access for you, so that you can safely work on the script without it causing further issues. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.
      You probably have a poorly written plugin or too many plugins active on that website.
      Since they have disabled the database on that site, you probably cannot access your wordpress site to resolve the issue.
      Reply to the ticket and tell them you will disable all the plugins and work with them to diagnose and resolve the problem.
    While that's always possible -- bad plugins -- the fact remains that Hostgator is NOT a good host.
    The site would probably be fine at other (better) hosts that don't severely (ridiculously) limit resources.
    I have no idea why people still suggest that in 2013. It's terrible. It's not even the same "Hostgator" anymore, not since summer 2012, and is nothing more than an EIG brand now. There are better hosts.
      That's because resources are limited.
      I would never host with a company that would allow one user to such up 25% of CPU when I have hundreds of other businesses relying on that network, too.
      This is most likely poorly written plugin, and it is ultimately the responsibility of the developer to know that X page is making 500 roundtrips to the database, for example. It's not Hostgator's fault.
      Note: not a Hostgator fanboy. I prefer Hawkhost.
      I have a plan on hostgator migrated to Utah (or wherever they left Planet to) and probably more plugins than I should, but I'm not exceeding their allowances. The OP either has waay to much traffic or more likely, a really bad plugin that's overloading the server.
    Just an FYI, HostGator seems to be going downhill. I have been a loyal customer for years and now it seems they are having all types of problems. You may want to look at another hosting service. My email with there service has been down for a week and they cannot give me a timeframe when it will work. Good luck. Has anyone else been having problems with HostGator?
    I have a reseller account at Hostgator and I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the quality of the servers. I am now going to have to migrate all my sites somewhere else and that is going to be one hell-of-a job.
    - My sites commonly lose contact with the MySQL server, causing my sites to give the same "Unable to access MySQL database" error. When I contact the customer service (which I've done more times than I care to count in just 5 months) they tell me it's because someone else is using all the resources. Well maybe they should manage this a little better, instead of telling me that "it happens".
    - Recently I noticed that my sites do not work. I looked into it and could not figure out any reason why. I just got a 500 error with every site. Turns out none of my sites were visible in my country. They showed up when using a proxy, but I could not access them anywhere in my country. (These are all small business websites with absolutely no questionable material). Customer service told me that "unfortunately they are unable to assist me with this problem".
    - The response time for my websites are laughable. There's very commonly a 5-15 second wait time from refreshing the page until it even starts loading the content. The DNS is seriously lagging.
    - The only positive side I've found is that the customer service is pretty nice there, but the only reason I know that is because I need to talk to them constantly.
    I've tried to use Arvixe and my initial impression is better but still not up to par. I would also be interested in hearing opinions on good shared hosting providers. I'm not ready to get a private server yet.
      Then don't use unlimited hosts for $4 --- or reseller accounts from those hosts.
      Arvixe is good, but for reseller hosting, there are others.
      HostGator is EIG, and EIG sucks.
      Stablehost is my usual suggestion.
      Veerotech (kingfish above) is also very good. I use that one myself for reseller hosting!
    I been having the same issues with CPU and my sites keep going down with Hostgator. Every time I bring up the issue they sound like a bunch of used car dealers trying to sell me on upgrades instead of fixing the issue.
    So I upgraded to see if they are correct...now they tell me I may need to go to a dedicated server because my sites are still down...That's strange my sites ran on a shared account for two years without any issues...It sounds like Hostgator is running a fundraiser over there.
    All my wordpress sites are up to date I have W3 Total Cache installed on all sites to help but I am starting to think it isn't my sites. I need a more professional hosting that's for sure.
      Upgraded to what? The last I recall, the CPU/memory limits are the same between shared and reseller accounts...
      Its going to continue to be a finger pointing contest no matter what you do.
    Yes for HG doesn't matter what shared/reseller account they all have the same limiting CPU / Memory. Sounds to me its your sites not the account or your on a really bad server.
    1. Are they all wordpress sites
    2. If so do they all have the same plugins
    3. Did HG try to move your account to a different server
