How successful have you been with the iPhone?

With all the hype being created, I am interested in knowing the actual truth via conducting a survey here asking for direct feedback from iPhone developers. Please share the following -

(a) Total time in months/years that you have been dabbling in the iPhone development space

(b) Number of Apps you have officially released on the App store

(c) Average revenues you have earned in total for each app and total revenues you have earned. No need to disclose your actual application / game name - just share the numbers.

(d) Major hurdles you have faced with iPhone development (lack of resources, training, ebooks and information online).

Thanks, and we hope the responses shed some light on the truth, for all developers, newbies and those still thinking of jumping on board.

I would love to know the same thing. I hope we get lots of replies with great information. I've been hearing good and bad on an ebook out there and run into some possible hurdles myself in my research. It looks like if you are not a developer, it's best to outsource this.

    Anyone else?

    (a) about 1.5 years
    (b) 0
    (c) $0.00
    (d) Lack of a Mac (but i've got one now)

I've made some cool stuff, but nothing worth releasing. Initially I had a problem since I didn't have a Mac. That issue has been rectified.

So you have to have a Mac in order to develop an app?
What about outsourcing the development? Tried that?

    So ronblade and Mike Thompson,

What kind of revenue have your apps brought you, if you don't mind sharing? Also what kind of expenses did you incur in the development and marketing of the apps?

    Thanks.

      Gentlemen!

There is a LOT of money to be made IF you do this the RIGHT way. Like in all businesses / ventures .. you need to get it right. That is the secret.

So, i'm going to share a few pointers. Firstly, its very important to have a free version of your app along with the paid version (keep it at 99cents).

You are not late to the party on the app store, but there are many people already there who know what is working. So , you need to play your cards right or you will get frustrated and have to walk out of the game. Spend a lot of time seeing the apps on the store. There are a LOT of them. DONT copy or make twists of what exists. Come up with a truly UNIQUE name. Ofcourse you need to have a UNIQUE game concept / gameplay too (if you are making a game). If you are making an App - there's so much you can do.

About buying a Mac for development ... no you do NOT need to buy one. If you sign up at EDUmobile.ORG classes - you get remote access to Mac time. Also, there's an easy way to create the emulator on a dual core. Just look around . I wont tell

If you want to eventually publish your app via te appstore - then you need the official SDK and acceptance by the folks at Mac and it costs $100. You will need to buy a real Mac to sign your app and publish it when you are ready. Alternatively, go for a co-publishing deal with the guys at EDUmobile.ORG and you get to keep 80% of the revenues coming in not bad. No hassle.

Finally, again i must repeat - there is $$$ to be made - but you need to go about it in a clever manner and the folks at EDUmobile will give you plenty of tips once you graduate.

Ofcourse, if you want to start earning immediately - you can bid to win the large number of mushrooming iPhone project listings on sites like Elance and RentACoder.

      All the best!

      Here's a small scoop on EDUmobile.ORG ...

EDUmobile.ORG has launched an iPhone Development Online Course that teaches candidates via Online Video, PDF Documents, One-on-One sessions and Weekly Worksheets. There is also an option to access a remote Mac, for those who do not have access to one. Candidates get a certification on completion and an option to co-publish their first app on the Apple App Store where they get to keep 80% of the revenues.

There is a lot of buzz about some independent developers and newbies who have made between $100,000 to $500,000 by simply creating their first iPhone application and putting it up for sale on the online Apple Store.

Steve Demeter made a simple puzzle game called Trism, and in 2 months he earned $250,000. Last December the app called iFart became the number one app on the App Store. It stayed on the top and raked in $9200 each day in profit after Apple's cut. Then, Ethan Nicholas, developer of the now famous iShoot game, earns $21,000 per day selling his iPhone app. Ethan quit his day job to work full time on the iPhone and he did not even know how to write Objective-C code before he made iShoot.

These are just some of the stories that are causing a lot of buzz, and people have quit their day jobs to cash in on the opportunity.

However, developing for the iPhone is relatively a new field with a shortage of well structured tutorials and one-on-one mentorship and help. EDUmobile.ORG has been involved with online training in the wireless technology programming field and has launched its iPhone Online Course to meet the shortage of information resources and training.

The course is offered on a once a week basis via Online Video, PDF Documents, One-on-One sessions and Weekly Worksheets. There is also an option to access a remote Mac, for those who do not have access to one.

The iPhone course offered at EDUmobile.ORG is crafted to suite the industry need for beginner and intermediate level developers. After the course completion, developers will be able to create software for iPhone and can optionally distribute their content through EDUmobile.ORG on the online App Store, and immediately start earning. One can also bid to win the large number of growing projects being posted daily on project bidding sites like Elance and RentACoder.

The classes are taught as a combination of various online modules and you get the ability to work on live industry projects, along with an opportunity to be placed in top mobile gaming and mobile application development software companies. A certificate is also offered to all candidates once they complete the course. The Course duration for is between 4 to 12 weeks depending upon the developers past experience in programming.

For those who do not own a Mac, there is a facility offered to remotely login to access a Mac to carry out your programming from a normal PC connected to the Internet. Thus, one does not need to purchase or own a Mac. The cost for the entire course is $200, and you can optionally avail of a facility to pay in 3 easy installments. Available slots are fast filling up. Please visit the iPhone page on EDUmobile to sign up.

Yes you do have to have a mac to run xcode, interface builder and the iphone emulator. You can download the sdk for free and put apps on the emulator but need to join the dev programme to put apps on a device/publish to the app store.

For those interested in gaming there is an open source 2d gaming framework for iphone games called cocos2d, you can find out more about it here cocos2d-iphone - Google Code

Forgot to mention as well if you do have any ObjectiveC knowledge you might be interested in this web framework which uses ObjectiveJ (basically ObjC syntax wrapped around javascript) to create really funky web apps which you *could* use to build an iphone app.

check it out Cappuccino Web Framework - Build Desktop Class Applications in Objective-J and JavaScript

        (d) I didn't know anything about programming as I was a graphic artist by trade. I have been using elance.com to find coders.

I am very interested in the EDUmobile course. Are there any samples of the videos, etc available anywhere? It has been hard to find info on this company.

I incurred initially about $3500 in development cost as they did the coding and some of the artwork. I wasn't sure what format and how it was needed, but after the first game I was able to do all the artwork for the updates and additional games I am working on. I'm still debating if it is worth learning to do this on my own..... I know the cost would be much lower if I kept it in house and could probably produce many more simple games and apps, but is that really what the APP store needs right now?

For me, as .NET coder, the best thing about iPhone now is MonoTouch. For those who heard about Mono (open-source equivalent of .NET framework for all platforms, not just Winblow$) - it allows to dvelop iPhone apps in pure C#. Although it's not free, but thanks to this stuff iPhone app development just got 100 times easier.

It is extremely easy to develop quality iPhone apps. I created one about a year ago with one week of knowledge from reading the "creating iPhone applications for dummies" book. It was a fairly simple app that I created using my friends Macbook and there was about $70 in revenue made. I didn't have the resources at the time to make more but it was a good experience.

I would have done a few things differently. First, I would follow the trend that seems to be occurring where each app is free, but you can choose to purchase features to make the experience more enjoyable. I know zynga capitalizes on this in many of their games. I would say it gets harder as the time goes by to make easy money creating apps because every day they become more advanced and more ideas are taken. There is still plenty of money to be made though.
