Monetize your programming knowledge

Hey guys, I'm currently studying machine learning / AI at my uni. I dabble in IM as a means to make some money on the side... Would I be able to use my programming skills to make a reasonable amount of money? (Say, more than $500 a month, with 1-2 hours per day)

I know there are people who sell their skills to make facebook apps or android/IOS apps. But it seems like this has so much competition.

  • Sure, all skills can be sold. If you can save people money, help them make money, remove their frustrations or save them time your skills have value. Competition is good as it means you're in the right zone and is way less than you think besides, quality always sells.

What sort of programming can you do exactly?

    • I totally agree, and quality is directly reflected from how much time is invested in learning and applying that skill. Which ties into your question- As of right now I'm familiar with C,C++,Java,Haskell, html, and css. However, to learn a new language realistically only takes about a week of straight dedication (reading a book. Writing programs you've previously written, but in this new language. Learning new functions. etc.)

So If I find out that writing facebook apps is the cash cow of the programming business, I'll spend a solid week 8 hours a day mastering the art of facebook apps. That's just my approach
  • Are you fluent in .Net? If so let me know.

  • Just be careful not to take on projects that require experience beyond yours. There is plenty you can do with your current skillset-- but, without experience, taking on something like custom coding an eCommerce site can be daunting.

Good luck and just be careful not to overpromise and underdeliver!
  • sure but its going to require lots of time. But most of all you need to make sure you're on top of your work of course.
