membership site using wordpress registration preventing users from upgrading

Here is the issue:
Our membership plugin uses the default wordpress user registration to sell memberships. We have fair number of users registered who registered for the free package but they can't upgrade automatically with out using a different email address and re-registering for the site with the other email address.
What we are considering is to take the free users email addresses and export them to a autoresponder or newsletter plugin that does not use the wordpress users table. Then we would delete the free users wp registrations so they would be able to buy paid memberships with their original email address.
Does anyone know an autoresponder or newsletter plugin that fits the bill?

or is there a better way to handle this?

The majority of quality membership plugins allow for a seamless upgrade, so what membership plugin are you using?

I think you seriously should think about using a different membership plugin.

Upgrading is a basic membership functionality, and something that should be totally automatic.

That's not my decision but thanks for the reply.Perhaps the people behind the one we are using now will read this thread and move that fix up on their priority list.

If you are going to make a real site you should consider a different plugin. I would recommend learning something that you will want to use again, that why next time you wont have to learn something new and your first site will be better for you and your customers.

Just figured out that this plugin does allow uogrades through the user profile. Strange their support didn't mention that when we asked how to get around the problem of it not allowing multiple purchases with the same email address.
