A developer's proposal to me about a game

I posted a job on Freelancer for a full game development for iOS and Android, and i received several bids, i chose one of those. The developer is asking for $5,000, credit and 50/50 partnership. The $5,000 is not a bad price for the game i want developed, but I thought that the 50/50 partnership is just too much. Meaning they will be making 50% of the profit, or that's how i understand it! I didn't know developers get any profits! What do you guys think?

  • In my experience, allmost every good developer at Freelancer.com requires an partnership. But I'm not saying 50/50 with this developer is the way to go. I have done 99/1 and 20/80 deals, for app/game development. It depends on so many things. :rolleyes:

    • The game they want to develop for me is a Clash of Clans clone, and $5,000 as a budget is kinda small for such project (a serious project like this needs at least $25,000). The developer said they will make a high quality demo for the game (character designs/video/audio...etc) and we'll start a kickstarter campaign to get more funds to finish it and get a polished product. So what do you guys think? is it fair? or is it just too much for a 50/50 partnership? Thanks for the reply

  • Partnership with a developer implies that the product will be maintained, debugged, improved, and there will be future versions released, correct? You don't want someone to just write code and then abandon the project.
  • Coming at it from a developers perspective, I would ask what you bring to the table besides the idea? If that's all, then 50/50 is a very nice deal on your end since they will be doing all the work (seems like they would even do the marketing for you based on your Kickstarter comment). If they only do the development, and you do all the marketing and everything else, the deal is more balanced, but they still have to risk their time on development while you risk nothing but your $5,000 upfront until they have come far enough for you to start marketing. As SJL said, it depends on so many things.

    One thing I would make clear with them (or anyone else) is what happens if a Kickstarter campaign does not meet the amount requested. Will the project be abandoned? Will there be made another attempt?

    You also want to make sure it is very clear who owns the code. Also, is this a 50/50 equity based partnership, or 50/50 revenue share? BIG difference if you ever sell your game.
