Vps, Filezilla and connection.

Hello all,

I have a new VPS (windows) with LibertyVPS offshore and was trying to connect to my VPS via Filezilla in order to upload files to my server. When I put the details into filezilla for it to connect I just get a timeout connection error. I am now wondering if it is more complex than that and I need to start configuring ports or something? Has anyone here got any experience with this? Any help appreciated Thanks.

  • Perhaps you don't have an FTP server running on the VPS.

    They don't always come with an FTP server running.

    You will most certainly have an SSH server running on the VPS.

    If that's the case, which I'm certain that it is, you'll need to go into Filezilla's site manager (go to File->Site Manager..) and create an "SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol" connection to your server.

    edit: Oh, you said Windows, LOL.

    The same thing applies though. Make sure there is even an FTP server running on your VPS. It's not guaranteed by default.

    Is this a deal where you have a full Windows desktop and can connect by RDP? If so, maybe you'd be best off connecting and seeing what is and isn't running, and go from there.
  • Does it connect and then timeout? OR does it not connect at all?

    For what it's worth, I always try toggle the Passive/Active preference. A lot of times it works. Don't ask me why
