Where to learn wordpress

Hi Warriors,

I have been trying to learn WP from last 3 to 5 years but failed every now & then. The problem is too much resources. This results in confusion & what ever I have learned does not stick with me. I need some resources that will give actionable results.

PS : I am not a programmer but knows basic php / html / css / js / database

As a WordPress developer I strongly advise you to master HMTL,CSS,PHP,Javascript, databases and have good knowledge of MYSQL and Ajax, then after that I would advise the book Professional WordPress: Design and Development by Hal Stern, David Damstra, Brad Williams ISBN: 978-0-470-56054-9. Then after that you should try to build as many projects as possible for a year or two and then after that you will know how to make anything with WordPress.

It took almost 2 months for me to know how to customize the twenty ten theme in wordpress that is what I used in my blog. I managed to design what I like from the header to the footer.

The important things to do in customizing any theme are the three parts that you can find in the tools under the appearance which you see the header, the sidebar and the footer files in which you can edit the php, html codes. And the CSS codes(style) file is also found there, including all codes for your website.

P.S. These things I said are found only in your own domain that you can download the wordpress system for free. In free wordpress will not work.

You can visit my website which is a twenty ten theme.

You really don't need to know Javascript (JS), nor Ajax.
MySQL knowledge is good, but often not necessary.
CSS and HTML covers the basics.
      PHP covers advanced uses.

      WordPress dev since 2007.

Thats quite strange for me since you know basic php/html/css/js/database, and take wordpress learning almost five years.
Since i have not basic knowledge in php/html/css/js/database, i just need months to learn everything about wordpress. It comes from trial and error process, when i have problem with css code or php code, i always ask to google search and youtube to find the answer then i practice it. That process make my wordpress skill growth.

the most convenience resources for me, comes from wordpress.org, codexcoder, codex.wordpress.org, wptuts, wplift, wpbeginner, wordpress.tv.

If you don't suite with them, then try the paid one like lynda, team treehouse, wpapprentice, or come to udemy courses.

Just try which one of them will suit with you.

Hi W13. Thank you for the information. However I am more or less lost. Only knowing basic of html/css/js/php etc does not help. Yes I google a lot. However I don't know WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE LEARNED. Say for e.g last time I did a contact us form validation using regular expression and later used WP's inbuilt e-mail method. I learned this because some one wanted me to fix his website. Howeve I am not sure what else should I learn at this point of time
I learn when I practically do something.

Wordpress can work with people without programming background but customizing the WP site can be very limited for them.

In your case, you have some basic knowledge on web development and i strongly suggest you study and have an advance learning about web development(html, css, php, mysql), specially php and mysql. those are the main thing about WP framework.
