Where to back link to. Does it make a difference?

So I almost never back link a sites homepage anymore. Maybe a few.

The rest I back link to individual main category pages of tightly themed silos.

This is what I'm wondering. Should I be building links to the sub category pages in the silos? Or should I be linking to the main category page and letting the juice flow down into the subcategories?

Does it even make a difference?

  • As I tested building backlinks to the single posts is the best way to go with SILO structure cos the link juice flows up from them and boost cubcategories and main categories.

Doing it from top will not make any difference, silo purpose is to pass a link juice from the bottom (posts) into up direction

    • That entirely depends on the structure of the site. You can easily build it the opposite way where everything is passed down from the homepage.
  • Hi,

I normally never link to my homepage because when I publish content, it displays on my homepage. I have a diversity of posts on my homepage and to target a specific keyword I feel is tough. However, with individual posts, you can target specific keywords and even related keywords. I would link to individual posts.

    Next,

if you look at normal human behavior, when they land on any given page, they most probably will skim over the home page afterwards.

    • And that is precisely why if I care about rankings and it is not absolutely necessary for my site, I always avoid dynamic pages for the homepage. Static homepage is the way to go..
  • Do your categories focus on any particular keyword? If yes, build links to the categories (main and sub if both of them have target keywords). Otherwise, build links to the posts you want to rank (again if they have target keywords).

If there are many posts you want to rank and you can't order link building packages for all of them, you can just build the links to the main category page so that the link juice will be distributed extensively across your posts.

Use a related posts plugin and include internal links to other articles within your posts if you want to leverage the link juice from your backlinks to the max.
  • Me and my brothers are hanging together and on the hooch tonight so I'm hesitant to talk about how things with my sites are structured due to my level of inebriation

Suffice it to say though my home page is indeed a static affair.

Beyond that, I do appreciate what you have all shared but must get back to the matter at hand here at the homestead.

I don't get to see my brothers enough as it is and I need to give them my full attention.

We're of German Irish descent and love alcohol, each other, and fist fighting.

We will probably have us a nice inner family brawl here in a bit and I really do need to have my attention fully focused locally

I hope everyone is enjoying there evening and will be back later in the day tomorrow.
  • I'd say it depends on what it is on your site that you want to rank. If your listbuilding then link to either a short or long squeeze page. If you're trying to be perceived as an authority on a particular topic then link to a post.
