How to beat sites like officemax and officedepot?

Do you think a small online business office produts store can rank next to sites like office depot and office max?

It seems very hard but I'd love to pull it off somehow.

I noticed some backinks they have are actually on charity originization sites which is an advantage if your business has hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend. I'm looking to try to get guest editiorial on some sites - I feel like that is the most realistic strategy even though that can be pretty hard too.

Cheers

Charity/donations comes in more ways than just money.
    • If you know your way around web/dev you could help nonprofits with their sites & get links that way.
    • If you know your way around Adwords you could get links from nonprofits by using the free $10,000 Google Adwords budget for nonprofits.

Obviously each situation is unique but there's thousands & thousands of nonprofits that need all kinds of help.

Thanks for the ideas. I hear that. I don't know much about web developing though so that probably isn't an angle I can really tackle. Also my site is primarily an e-commerce site along with having two blogs on news and information on its topics so I'm not sure we could actually get a grant by Google for us. I guess at least I can try to look more into competitors backlinks and see who mentions them online.

The Adwords example was meant for helping other domains (nonprofits) manage their PPC accounts in exchange they give you a link for you donating your time to help them. In that example you could target relevant nonprofits to your niche then build new/small sites as part of your own link network.

        Example link flow:
        • nonprofit > your new/small niche site > your money site

Example link flow, If I was selling auto parts on my money site:

That way, If you ever build a 2nd money site in the same niche later on, you already have an entire link network ready to go the first day the money site goes live.

Just one example of link building.
