  • Any answer about Google ranking is speculative because no-one outside the Google elite actually knows.

    But the received wisdom is that you need:
    1. a relevant site with unique content and preferably a domain name that is close to your keyword;
    2. site optimized to the root keyword plus a number of closely related keywords;
    3. as many inbound links as you can get with anchor text equal (but not exclusively so) to your keyword;
    4. persistence!
    Ranking for a high traffic, high competition keyword can take up your entire lifetime so don't have this as your primary objective. Instead go for the so-called 'long-tailed fruit' which means that it's easier to optimize for highly relevant keywords which don't get so many searches.

    Keyword research is vital here, because there is no point sweating on stuff that is too competitive and too imprecise for the determined buyer. For example, if you are selling dog biscuits it's easier to rank for 'organic high energy doggie chews' than 'dog food'.

    Always try to rank for the product name: it's not as difficult as you might think to get on to page #1.

    What you want is keywords that are relevant to your niche, have a lot of traffic and have less than (say) 50,000 searches per month.

    And don't confuse page rank with search position. If your website (or blog) is deemed relevant enough to warrant a search #1 position then Google will put you there even if you have fewer backlinks than your competitors.

    Good luck!

    • The simple answer is you are going to have to invest either some money or time to reach your goals. What do I mean by that you may be thinking. You can rank for any keywords you choose with competition in the millions, but you will have to follow a plan to do so.
      You could write some articles and get backlinks to those articles, have some videos made and again link to them.
      You can take your article RSS feeds and submit them to the various sites that accept RSS feeds. You can bookmark your sites and again submit their RSS feeds and profile pages.
      Don't be put off by people who say don't try to compete with competition with more than say 500,000 because I can tell you if you follow the correct plan you will be amazed at what you can achieve.
      If you need more details PM me as I don't want to go into too much here as it could affect my sites. But the short answer is as I said you will have to invest some time or money to get the results you want.
      Most of your competitors will not follow through on a complete plan to get the best results from Google and Yahoo etc.

  • You have already answered your own question. Go for the article's and blog!

    Then each article/blog will be for one or two keyphrase and concentrate on just those. Get it to climb the ranks then you will have loads of traffic portals leading into your main site.
