Hi,

I read somewhere that in GWTs Google will tell you if the inbound link is a bad one.

Where do I go to see that info?

Thanks

You can check all your inbound links at "Link to your site" tab in "Search Traffic" category. If you want to see only bad links then you have to check each link manually, as Google won't tell you which link is bad.

Although if Google applied manual penalty to you website then you may received notification about having bad incoming links which causes the penalty.

So how does one check to see if a link is bad? Please give me the steps.

Never got any e-mail stating there was a manual penalty.

    Thanks

You have to lookout in GWT site messages if you are getting any manual spam. And for bad links go to >> "Links to your Site" section see which websites are linking to yours and manually open them to check weather they are worth linking or not. If not, use Disavow Link tool and get it removed.

There are a few options but I would suggest starting with Webmaster Tools:
    • First, set up a Webmaster Tool account
    • Add your website and verify it
    • Go to Search Tools > Links to Your Site > More
    • Under "Who Links Most" click "Download Latest Links"
    • You can then see a spreadsheet view of your latest inbound links
Bad links are those which having following criteria

    • Non-niche directories with no particular focus or criteria
    • Non-genuine blog comments with spammy link text (ie, not your name)
    • Site-wide links can be a red flag, investigate further
    • Any sites completely unrelated and irrelevant to your site
    • Profile links and low quality or spun article links
Then You can remove bad links by using Google's Disavow Tool

If you get a manual penalty, they will send you a message. SOMETIMES, they will include culprit links.

That's it. One, 2 or even 3 links.

      Ok, thank you for this.

So, a lot of the links are from forums like this.

A couple are needed b/c they are forums relating to my business, but the rest aren't.

Are you saying I need to remove the ones that are on forums like this one?

And I should never have the link in my signature?

I don't know what this means, can you explain? "Site-wide links can be a red flag, investigate further"

      Thanks

Well, what GWT tells you is the links pointing to your site it doesn't tell you what about it bad back link, you have to download all the backlinks and filter out yourself which backlink is bad .
