Any words of caution for creating an affiliate program with backlinks in relation to SEO?

I am making an affiliate program for my British TV abroad website and I was wondering if there is anything I should be wary about or any tips anybody could give in relation to how people posting the affiliate links around the web could effect my SEO?
Could it potentially damage my SEO?
Anything I could do to avoid any negative impact?

Ps: My sig does link to my program but I really do need this advice for real and that link has been in my sig for awhile now so I hope this post is ok.
