Google Penguin related to adwords - reality or conspiracy?

Do you think there was intention on some level for the Penguin algorithm to hit legit businesses and that was part of why it took a year to refresh? In other words for sites hit by Penguin the only option for them to show up on Google is through adwords.

What's your take on it?

Conspiracy or did Penguin need a lot of work and Google simply was trying to weed out spam (and maybe messed up in the process).

It's a dumb theory. They have no way of predicting who would be willing to spend on AdWords.

Makes no sense. I have yet to see any search results with zero
      results, 10 ads.

What I regularly see is millions of results, a couple of ads.

You obviously don't know the first rule of adwords (or at least
      what google strives for)

The first rule, is they don't want adwords filled with junk.
So why send a bunch of penalized people to adwords?

Their whole business model would blow up if those fools
      were let in.

The reality is, the adwords high QS sites would not even
be affected by such sites. There are only so many ads.
Google does not want nor need everyone in.

Google has enough fools trying adwords.

I think this is a nonsensical theory. It doesn't make sense at all. Google doesn't penalise websites to increase their Adwords customers. The ad expenditure of big brands is what makes up the majority of Google's ad profits. Therefore, whether they penalise websites or not, they'll keep getting their profits.

      So?

The market was down as a whole because of people crapping their pants about this Ebola nonsense.

Google released no earnings information or other financial information that would lead investors to feel that Penguin was having a positive impact on their bottom line and cause the small increase in their stock.

Really grasping at straws with that one.

Sure it will provide some boost to Adwords, especially in the coming weeks/months before christmas, only logical as people still want to get a piece of the market.

Heck I myself also started Adwords campaigns in November and December as it turned out very profitable in these months (also had to do with my products that relate very well to that period), not cause my site was tanked but just to make money.

But yeah, if someone had decent traffic and that drops away right before christmas they'll definitely consider to spend their money with Adwords, only makes sense.

Whether that increase makes a huge change in the overall numbers I don't know, a good part would probably also started additional Adword campaigns even if they were not tanked, just to drive extra traffic / sales in these profitable months.

Or they just targeted companies that hired bad SEO companies to work on their websites.

In turn those sites got hit, and now don't rank well. Sure some will move to paid traffic and others will just give up entirely.
