in the long run - one authority site vs two in the same niche?

Anyone have an opinion on one vs. two sites with virtually the same or similar products?

Would Google not downgrade if they see that both sites are selling similar things?

I wonder cause one site I'm trying to get out of a penalty even hired link delete for it now. I'm also considering an off shoot site. I guess with minimal investment it is possible it could grow over time too. Any idead?

Thanks

I've done both over the years. I would never depend on a single site. Multiple domains targeting the same/similar keywords & other traffic sources outside the SERPs is the best way to go.

That's crappy links & doesn't have anything to do with owning multiple domains in the same niche.

Does g00gle care if two sites are being run from the same account?

Is there any chance of being downgraded in rankings that way or does it not matter?

Host both domains on different web hosting accounts and you won't have to worry about that.

If you are planning to create a legit site or sites, why try to hide anything?

True. So they can both be on the same webmaster tools with no problem then.

So Google wont see it weird for two sites to compete on the same products from the same ip/user, etc?

I'd try to mix products up too but a number of them would be the same tho.

There's no problem running similar sites on the same WMT account. Make sure the pages are unique across all the domains involved.

Google doesn't have a problem ranking 2 or 3 internal pages per keyword on a single domain so I'm not sure why you would think Google cares about multiple domains targeting the same niche/keywords.

I'm talking about legit sites here, not spammy sites.

    2 Niche Authority Sites

I heard some crazy guy even went for 3 Niche Authority Sites, but he died of a PR overdose. Be careful out there.

Thanks. I hear that and my sites are legitimate online businesses. Nothing spammy here besides cleaning up one of my sites past bad seo work.

then you are all good - I understand you reason to hedge your bets accross 2 domains, it does double your work if tehy are going for the same keywords, but you can also try different things on each see what works best, splt test, conversion optimise etc- and ultimatley get double traffic

Personally I think as long as they are hosted on different servers, have different content (can be same topics but not copy) and don't cross link then it should be ok.

After all, if both sites are ranking for the same keywords there's less space for competition right?

If you are having the different hosting and different domain then there is no need to worry about the downgrade of the site and its a good thing to have 2 niches.

In my testing i preferred one big authority site rather than 2 in the same niche. You have to think of the time and cost for 2 authority site in the same niche. Managing 1 big one is easier than 2.
