  Money and /or Time are going to be your biggest difficulties (if you don't have it)
  
  You can outsource everything, which costs money, you can do all yourself which requires a lot of time.
  
  And then there's the thing: Who to outsource to?
  
  Lacking a solid plan might also be a huge difficulty for quite a few people, you can build a great site but if it doesn't rank, or not high enough according to your expectations...
  
  What you gonna do in such case?
  
  Most noobs have plenty of time but they lack a plan and money most of the time. Makes you real tired when you spend a ton of time on content and building the site but no money to rank it.
  
  What's money good for in SEO?
  
  - Buying expired or dropped domains
  - Buying content to speed up the process
  - Buying hosting to host the additional domains you bought
  
  Sure you can do link outreach, back to time, but that doesn't work in all niches and when I look at the average site an IM'er builds (I've seen many) then no one with a sane mind would ever link to it so back to money again to build your own network to rank it or outsource it to someone else.
  
  Personally I do have money and time on my hands so I'm in a good position, though my weakness is lazyness, starting all kind of plans without really finishing anything properly. For example I had 30 Amazon sites build and only till about 3-4 months ago they ranked. Why? Cause I started the link building only 5 months ago, that means the sites were on the shelf for over 8-9 months. Makes no sense. Now they got hit by Penguin 3.0 lol, I did make my money back in those few months but still, could've made many times more if I stuck to my plan.
  
  Nothing is really too difficult though, in fact SEO is quite simplistic when you think of it.

I'd say the biggest hurdle is in believing that myth, among many, many others.

If your SEO person is a myth believer, ditch them.

Problem is, 99% of "seo" people, keep repeating these myths.

These days there really are no short cuts when doing SEO... Also many assume that its easy to do with no real background and understanding of the subject...

SEO is fast moving with the many algo changes from search engines like Google so you need to keep on top of it... There are safe methods and methods which can best be described as crash and burn which has its uses... If you want to learn SEO then you need to put the hours, time and effort into it...

What works for me these days is quality vs. quantity... That is epic content on your blogs, on page optimization with silos, very few backlinks with no/very little commercial anchor text at approx 10% or less...

Good luck with it! If at first you don't succeed, keep trying and don't give up!

For me a big problem on SEO has been stablishing cause-effect relationships between drops or rises of traffic and the event that triggers them.
I mark dates of modifications, backlinks created, but still sometimes it doesn't make sense. And I know for a fact they're not algorithmic/manual penalties. Still mad at some unreasonable downs.

One of the biggest difficulties with SEO is just keeping up
with the never ending changes that are happening all the time.
For example it used to be sound advice to concentrate wholly on Backlinks without bothering too much about the quality of content on your site, whereas now it would appear that Google is placing more emphasis on on-page factors like how fast your site loads, its html structure and how unique the content is.
Make sure to find a way to keep informed as to what is working right now.

I think content makes some difficulties on SEO because google loves fresh, unique content so making a unique content which fulfills the white hat seo rules and regulations be challenging work for every SEO experts, rather than the other seo strategies to be followed and managed for each and every work.

Out of all above, it is very difficulty to gain the quality back links. BL are the most important concept in rankings, because they are not in our hands to get immediate result, of course content and most onpage factors plays a crucial role in ranks, but they are in our hands to change immediately. So from my point of view, i think Quality back links are the most difficulty part in SEO

Primarily working on a US timeclock is difficult for me, means I could be up til 5am or later. Where I live, anyone that sells alcohol or drugs, usually goes to bed around midnight.

Having to remind myself to check stock levels before midnight, has proven very difficult indeed.

(edit example just occured)
Perfect example.

I've just ran out of chocolate milk to mix with my Baileys. Now the store that sells the milk won't open for another 6 hours. I could get regular milk from the petrol station, but it really doesn't taste as nice. And you think you've got problems? oh man..

I believe good quality content is just one of challenges when it comes to SEO.
There are things we need to look at as well, and the greatest challenge (to me) is to ensure that we're
on the same line with what Big G thinks when it comes to SEO, its just my humble opinion though, but constant
changing the way Big G ranks is definitely something that I spend more energy to get over.

Well, the greatest hurdle on SEO is, base on experience, is a unique content. that is the biggest one. but as huge fan of content marketing, you can actually bend that to what we call 'artistry in writing' and make it to some point of 'originality'.
Some others are:
1. Google updates
2. greedy competitors (and ME myself).

As long as you are building high quality content and arranging decent marketing campaigns, there will be no difficulties.

However, i guess the main difficulty is learning SEO the right way. There are thousands of tutorials up there and picking the right courses can be a hard task sometimes. Once you learn SEO and keep updating yourself with the latest trends and marketing techniques, you won't face any more problems when it comes to traffic generation.
