Does having a blog improve ranking of a website?

Hi,
I know that this may seems an obvious question but does having a blog and a long amount of blog posts (with good content) improve the website ranking?
When people say that "SEO is about content" they mean that, right?(other than the code optimization and so on).
I would like to create a blog and blog posts in a website of a company to improve their SEO ranking.

Thank you in advance for the answers.
Andrea

    What shall I say.

I've seen people with thin sites add a blog purely with the purpose of adding content, those blogs looked AWFUL, crappy articles, not a single thing to cheer it up or make it interesting for possible readers. It really looked like a crappy content farm.

Those blogs didn't seem to help anything.

So if you add a blog make sure it's worth it for your visitors and not just add a blog cause the rest of your site is so thin.

Big mistake others make, they add a blog under a sub domain, which takes away the whole benefit completely.

Make the blog an integral part of your site, interlink from the main pages of your site to your blog and vice versa, make it part of your site and you should benefit from it. Also structure it decently, not just a list of blog posts all under one category, Google seems to have a high preference for well structured sites.

Blogs offer a lot of SEO benefits that you can't get with a website.

There a lots of free plugins you can use to optimize your pages and post

Plugins to ping the search engine

    Automatic sitemaps and much more

There are many plugins that will help your page rank

You will need to learn how to set up your blog correctly

Yes absolutely! Having a quality blog in the website and posting blogs with some strategy and frequency makes a better chance to make presence in google search for multiple keywords. For example if you sell accounting software, then having comparison between different accounting software, review about these software, blog related to that software will give your site a possibilty to get in google result. I can summarize it in -
    1. You will get branding.
    2. You will find new audience.
    3. You will always be with new and fresh content for your new and existing customers.
    4. Possibilty to rank for other and long tail keywords.

If you post a blog post, and its high in quality, and relevant to your site, and you do it regularly for a few months, perhaps with some nice interlinking, then yes you should see a increase in your ranking.

If you have a blog and you are updating it with quality content on regular basis then sure your rankings will improve.

You can do that without maintaining a blog.

No having blog doesnot improve ranking of the website but it does help in increasing traffic to the website which in turn helps in increasing ranking to the website.

No it does not. Just having a blog does not increase traffic.

I agree that having a blog is helpful when it comes to bringing traffic to your website but all of that can be done with out one. It just depends on how much time you're willing to invest in it.
