I agree that comment posting is helpful for generating traffic, but your comment should be on top blogs. Otherwise, you will get only a little traffic from there. If I talk about links, then links are very important and play a great role in SEO. But, your links should be natural and not defy Google's quality guidelines.

Yes comment makes more traffic definitely. I have worked on some fashion blog for some time. In a first couple of days it had only 3 or 4 visitors daily until some Chines girl wrote something completely stupid in one post and started avalanche of comments and arguments that i allowed purely to see when its going to end. Comments do help in generating "some" traffic if they are coming from good standing relevant websites. Don't rely on them though as your core internet marketing technique. Always work on different methods at the same time.
