Dramatic drop in ranking

Hello,

I have a website that is about a year old, it was slowly rising in the serps for a keyword then it dropped down dramatically.

This is what the ranking looks like

At about October 17th when I noticed that my website is getting really high in the ranking I (foolishly) made some changes to the website, this is what I did:

Updated the recommended affiliate links
Updated Wordpress to 4.0
Updated the plugins which include XML Sitemap and All in one SEO
Fixed few sentences

I don't think I made any other big changes, also I after I noticed the drop, I changed most of it back except for the update of the plugins and Wordpress.

I don't have any "manual action" in my Google webmasters. It is still in the index, the ranking is very low though

I don't know what caused this, hopefully someone can help.

Thank you,

  • From your changes this can be the only one ... but not enough details from your side.

All of the other are OK.

What is missing is details about your seo of the site ...

    • well when I first created I spent a lot of time on SEO, It was working clearly since I got top 10 rankings, I don't know what happened now.
  • I think that is when the new penguin update hit around oct 17th..

Might want to check your backlink profile and anchor text.

Here is a pretty cool little tool that may help

    • Thanks yukon for checking it out,
Its actually coffeviews that I am talking about.
  • Couple things could be going on here.

    1) Check your PBN sites, your network may have been compromised by Google.
    2) Check your anchor text ratios. I've found the following to be safe:
    <4% root keywords
    <5% Long Tails
    >40% URL
    >30% Brand
    <11% Brand + keyword
  • You have a ton of low quality links. That combined with the date of your drop, and it is pretty easy to conclude the site was hit by Penguin.

    • Thanks everyone for replying and special thanks to accessted for linking to that tool.

I figured out that I have been hit by penguin 3.0
  • Hi,

Panda 4.1 rolled out Spetember 25th and then Penguin came out on October 20th or so. I think the changes are a result of these two. However, sit back and see what happens because when updates come out it takes a few weeks for things to settle.
  • hello, is that chart the question you want answer for?
if it only fluctuates for one day, then it's google dance, it happens all the time, but if what you do is correct, it will bounce back....sometimes they might even deindex your site during google dance, so no worries
