I'm planning on purchasing multiple keyword-rich domain names, some exact match domains are only available in .net, but not .com... are .net the same as .com in terms of SEO?

    none.

.net .com .org domains boils down to personal preference, and does not matter in terms of SEO

I came across this page that says that Google prefers .com

Google vs. Bing: Correlation Analysis of Ranking Elements - Moz

This is the graph they added after researching over 10,000 queries

and they said .com's are the way to go.

      Is this true?

Google does not prefer .com over .net.

.com's are just far more popular, so you will find more of them in the search results. It has nothing to do with Google's preference.

If you care about returning traffic, a .com is probably better because if a competitor owns the .com they might grab some of your traffic. Visitors are used to typing in .com and may inadvertently type the .com version and end up on someone else's website.

For SEO though, it does not make a difference.

Kangen333 that graph is from 2010 so much has changed in the SEO world since then , google no longer puts that much weight if any on your domain name , ranking is based on other factors , such as backlinks , quality of backlinks, social signals, bouncerate , relevancy of sites sending you link juice and so much more .

Thank you, what I'll do then is buy a .com if the keyword domain is available, and a .net if the .com isn't available.

Always try and get or go with .com - every-time. Think about the marketing dollars behind .com versus the other tld's alone and you'll quickly come to this conclusion.
