    Forums links are stronger than blog comments, social bookmarking, directories etc...

    But I'm not talking of signature link, if you manage to get links from authority and relevant forums in post, instead of signature, it will help.

      They don't penalize nofollow links, but it's not ranking a page.

    Google ignores forum links they are nofollow. If you find a forum without nofollow they will pass SEO benefit like any other site, though if it's spammed for dofollow links Google might stop PR flow from the site (treat all external links as nofollow).

    So not positive or negative SEO wise, ignored.

    They will make manual exceptions where link spam is over the top, but that's not the norm, the norm is ignored SEO wise.

      Yes, forum is one way to gain backlinks but it is not the main purpose of joining forum sites. Interacting with the users in a forum sites is not only for backlinks, it is more of giving values to your target users and in return you build a positive reputation to the website you carry.

    Forum posting links are effective for SEO and marketing both. I think you want to know about SEO. If you can create backlink on high PR forums that would be effective to get PR and traffic. You can also try signature link. As far I know forum links are more effective than Blog comment.

    For traffic? Yes
    For improved authority and ranking? Not really

    Quick rule I like to go with, if you can get a link without communicating with a person to get it, it isn't worth much in terms of transferring authority.

    From a traffic perspective, forum links can be excellent.

    Yes, Forum answering in relevant threads is always a best source to generate traffic on website and Google also consider forum answering on relevant threads to rank your side.
