Researching competition for product specific sites

Hi all,

Recently I've been toying with an idea to create a site about a product. This is a specific hifi/audio product, which has been around for some years and the intention is to use the Amazon affiliate model (or Google Adsense, whichever is better). I know LOTS about this product and can write tons of content and produce videos.

As with many established products, I'm finding it very difficult to determine whether competition is high or not, thus I'm wondering whether there is any point in creating this site.

If you search for specific products (or variations of the product), the top 10 results in Google are dominated by retailers - the domains of which are very old with tons of inbound links etc. In fact, the only search terms that aren't dominated by these big retailers are search terms attracting virtually no traffic!

Are any of you put off by this? I know it boils down to the competition of the search term, but it seems as though there is no point in attempting to create sites about well known products. A few years ago, I wouldn't have been bothered about the competition, but things have changed.

Thanks,

J
