Blogs in subdirectories or in separate domains?

As a book publisher, I've heard that "every book deserves a blog." If I use XSP or Dreamweaver to build my main website and also want to have WordPress blogs for very specific niches (ie one for each book I publish), would it better to place these blogs within my main website in a subdirectory, or in separate domains, with links to the main website/domain?
