Hello,

When you create a silo style site, do you build links to the categories instead of the individual page?

So

Home Dog cages, Dog toys etc etc

You would just build to dog toys, which has all the posts underneath it? Or mix?

Thanks.

Myself? I build the links to the main category pages. But have built a few to subcategory pages because I had so many going to the main category page.

Build links to the main category pages and the subcategories. Build links to every category page you want to rank. Some posts/pages might also need links of their own if the link juice flowing from the category pages isn't enough to rank them for their target keywords.

The best example of good link silo style is wikipedia, you can learn from it. Google love wikipedia, so it is worth to model how they do it.

I usually build to all three levels.

Depends on the links. If they're super powerful links, I'll build them to the homepage so the link juice can just filter down with relevant anchor text.

However, I'd build referral links straight to specific blog posts if applicable to certain situations. And more often build links to the silo category pages.

Regardless of where you build the links to, a silo site should be able to move link juice through the site quite smoothly unless it's to a post really nested into the site.
