Yes. You are not supposed to generate automated queries per Google's terms of service.

    https://support.google.com/webmaster...er/66357?hl=en

    Automated queries

Google's Terms of Service do not allow the sending of automated queries of any sort to our system without express permission in advance from Google. Sending automated queries consumes resources and includes using any software (such as WebPosition Gold) to send automated queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage ranks in Google search results for various queries. In addition to rank checking, other types of automated access to Google without permission are also a violation of our Webmaster Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Interesting. In that case I may keep trackers off my site to not get hit by that.

It is against their TOS, but they also have no idea what site you are checking.

When you run a SERP checker all it's doing is scraping the HTML of the search page, so like Mike said, Google has no idea which domain/webmaster is doing the search queries. It doesn't even have to be any of the domain/pages ranked on the 1st page of the SERPs, it could be new competition buried on page #53.

Funny thing is Google doesn't have a problem pilfering the web, but they don't like anyone doing the same to the SERPs. Imagine all the bandwidth Google has consumed over the years from domains they don't own.

My TOS specifically state I don't care what they want.

You just need to always remember that, there is no spoon. And it is only you that bends.

So? Unless you are hosting your website from home, that doesn't matter either.

3rd party SERP checker or a proxy.

If it's 3rd party Google is looking at the server making the search query, which could be located in Siberia. The 3rd party SERP checker then delivers the data to a password protected account. There's no end user IP looking at the SERPs.

      Proxy is self explanatory.

Even running something free like RankChecker on Firefox can be setup with a delay to avoid the SERP IP block. Still, Google has no idea which domain is doing the keyword search.

If you are using a static IP address, it would have a red flag from Google.......

Then it will check how many Gmails (Google accounts have activities from that IP address) --> GMT --> your list of websites

Even if you are checking from home, with a static IP, they still do not know which website's ranking you are checking.

Only on something local (ex: RankChecker on Firefox) If your blazing through search queries. Then they'll do a temporary IP block which can still be removed by clearing the browser history & resetting a modem (every bit of 20 seconds).

I've done the whole manual SERP rank checking while having a WMT account connected to a few domains (obviously not logged into a Google account). No big deal, still ranking pages.
