I have noticed quite a few of you are still advocating these methods of link building. I've stayed away from them for a few years now, generally because Google says, but is there still value in it?

Well, at least you don't have SEO nonsense in your sig...but your reply is
waaaaaaaaaaay off. delicious, digg, tumblr, pinterest, twitter, etc. are nofollow.

Wordpress sites? What makes a wordpress site special?

Not sure what decade you people live in. It will soon be 2015.
Anyone else in besides me? Apparently not, judging by this thread.

Yes Forum, Web 2.0, social bookmarking, directories still have importance but if you used it properly.Never get spam by submitting your site on hell of low quality directories. Just focus on web 2.0 and High PR social bookmarking sites to get good backlinks.

It's not only for backlinks only, you get exposure as well, and if you provide good contents, you build your reputation as well.

Just look at the people who still recommend these junk links and you can pretty much tell for yourself:

Newbie marketers who think crappy $5 articles on money sites are a good way to build a business
"SEO Experts" - hoping you'll click their sig link and buy services to create those crappy links
People only posting a barely coherent thought just to spam their own sig link in the thread

If that doesn't tell you what you need to know, nothing will...

I haven't used them for years, and don't plan to. Now the exception to directories is for local SEO clients who need to be in local directories like yelp, manta, insiderpages, citypages, etc. Regular link directories are useless. Forum links for SEO is a bad idea and really low quality as far as links go but if it is a forum where you can drive traffic then it's worth it.

Profile links are pretty much useless.

The only time you should really use these types of links are for 2nd or 3rd tier properties you don't care about.

Web 2.0s are great source of quality link if you do it right. If you treat web 2.0 as your personal website, eventually they will be come authority sites that can send quality back links.

I stopped directory submission a long time ago.
I do bookmarking when I only have valuable links to bookmark, and only to top bookmarking sites like stumbleupon and reddit.
Forum, well yeah obviously but not mainly for link building but more on sharing and learning new ideas about the field.
    Web 2.0, sure thing.
Most of the strategies still works well for me but it depends on how it will be executed, and also the intentions.

Your mentioned four things are very effective for seo, Forum and web2.0 is very effective, social bookmarking is another platform of ranking up website position. Directory submission is not less important, these four things absolutely very famous for seo.
Forum and web2.0 is king here you can name it, because of it passes the website link juice to others so it is very effective for a website.
