Where do I even start? I've followed tips from many professional bloggers and SEO experts to a tee and my blog(that has quality, relevant content) is still buried on the 5th page of google for a keyword(s) that have fairly low competition. This blog has been up for about a year and I have been gaining a little ground on social media, thinking this is the only way I can get people on the site. Any thoughts?

This is just a quick thought - I haven't seen your blog - but have you got any decent links to high ranking blogs? You could do an article and pay to submit it to a high pr/high domain authority blog in your niche. That way you could get some decent links, perhaps some more traffic, and Google will see your blog more positively. I am sure others will come along with some good advice too.

I am a contributor and the webmaster of another high ranking blog (on the 1st page for its keyword(s)) and I link back to my site frequently, but this really is the only other blog that I have any links from. Maybe that's my problem?

Well! I can suggest you to buy some high pr backlinks or build your web 2.0 link wheel.

That would help you to get better ranking. All the best

Forum posting: doesn't increase seo rankings
Blog posting: usually doesn't help unless it's a dofollow link
Pinging: doesn't help with seo. this is used to index a url faster

You named almost the worst ways you could possibly do "effective" seo.

Do you have anything constructive to add? Simply saying what was suggested is the "worst" really adds nothing to this thread. What can I do to improve my SEO in your opinion?

Every man and his dog on the internet is an SEO expert, doesn't mean they'r actually an SEO expert.

What on-page/off-page SEO have you been doing on the site this past year? Time as a factor in itself doesn't rank a website particularly high. Aged backlinks do.

Social media doesn't directly help a site rank.

    ----------------

I'm 90% sure that you've either got your keyword competition research wrong, or you haven't built many quality links. Most likely both.

On page SEO mostly: creating SEO attractive permalinks, enhancing post titles for SEO. Keywording metatags.

Yeah, I know. I was thinking my main traffic source may have to come through social media and not search engine. Which is fine, my niche is very active on social media, mostly facebook. I've made a little bit of money through amazon, driving my traffic from facebook.

A few keywords that I am competing for have relatively low search volume, in the hundreds per month but others have 20,000+ searches monthly and still relatively low competition. I feel like I need to be building links.

Thanks for the help guys! Building links is where I am lacking, I am sure now!

What you need is high authority backlinks. Backlinks from authority sites that have a high trust flow and citation flow on majestic.com with lots of articles and that are spidered frequently by Google. Links are king when it comes to ranking higher.

No, none of it is spammy, its all relevant and high quality info for my readers. I'll drive traffic through SM to this particular site and learn from this experience. Better keyword research is needed.

    Without reading the whole thread;

I have my new blog (2 months old domain) ranking 1st on Google for 3 keywords in Google US, UK and FR. The blog has one backlink (from my older site which itself has no backlinks).

Let me ask you, what do you consider by low competition?

Well, I am the only other site/blog in my niche, that I can find at least, Random articles written on other sites that are in a similar niche are ranking higher than my site for a few different keywords. Its just puzzling to me since another site (in a similar niche that I am the webmaster/contributor for and haven't put much effort into SEO), is on the first page of google for a few keywords. This site has more content than mine does, but zero backlinks and pages/posts are not optimized for SEO.

Maybe you over optimized your current site. That could be true, especially if the other site which is about a similar subject has no (or little) SEO work done on it. Sometimes, doing too much is a big culprit on not ranking as it's a clear sign to Google that someone is trying to trick them.

The less I focus on SEO, the better it gets for me. I spend my energy just worrying about syndicating my content to put it in as many places as possible.

Things such as Web 2.0 properties, Social Bookmarks, Guest Posts, Docsharing(convert article to .pdf and upload to sites like slideshare.net), and Video Marketing all drive me tons of relevant, targeted traffic.

It's better to buy some backlinks from higher page rank blog websites and also advertise your blog in social media . Don't spend too much on advertisement. I am suggesting these for starting purpose.

Try to use better tags for each post, make the content more useful for the visitors, use better images, perhaps some location-specific tags et al.

Been on the 5th page means you Onpage SEO is okay but lack quality links to push it up.

The problem is, most of the links people call quality backlinks are actually not and nothing but low/spammy links that could hurt your overall ranking experience.

It's not really in anyone's interest to openly discuss SEO strategies but the basic stuff you need to defeat any site on the SERP is:

    Time
    Unique content
    Relevance
    High PR links
Low OBL, in areas where there is.

For low competitive keywords, you are at 5th position. I guess you need to revamp your SEO strategy. Do check what your competitor is doing. Maybe a quick competitive backlink analysis might help you?

Many SEO Experts nowadays will keep the most of what they know for many reasons.

1 reason is that SEO grew so BIG that everyone in the business will jump up and abuse anything and everything that will rank their site.

I suggest you have to read a lot and know a lot and find out what really works nowadays and apply to your site. It will take you 6 months in self study every info you need is in the web.

I was once stuck on the 5th page of SERP but after the two recent updates my site climbed up from the 5th page to the 2nd page and now on the 1st page of SERP. How did I do it? I don't know either, all I know is that I don't think of Search Engine too much. I always think of my target audience. How can I catch their attention, what will make them engage, what invaluable information I can share to them to catch their interests and so on...

Your blog should be be interesting in order to get the traffic your need. Search for high ranking keywords using a keyword research tool.

When writing your blog, use different synonyms instead of using the same words all over again.

to get a better search result you should try increasing your page rank and visibility. this can be done by using good seo techniques which i have mentioned below...
-social media: make good use of social media like facebook, twitter, linkedin etc to create visibility among the consumers.
-article publishing: submit some quality articles without much keyword stuffing and a genuine article in which you can put in your article.
-guest blogging: try putting relevant contents in some of the external blogs.
    -social bookmarking.
    -directory submission.
    -press releases.
