Hi Warriors,
We spent the last 3 years building a business directory site. It is a way different then most out of the box scritps. The site offers a real value to the users and has and many functions which our competitors don't. Duplicate companies are filtered, link structure is optimized, urls are canonical, meta data is unique. The only directory similiar to our is Yelp but i can say that our is better in terms of usability and structure. We have launched the site 1 month ago but the traffic is still very poor.

What i am wondering is how long does it take for a domain with no authority and thousands of pages to rank well on Google? I know that many will say about the quality, but all pages have unique content and offer real value to the users. We are building SEO very carefully and getting links slowly, only from reputable sources.

The other thing that looks strange for me is Google index. When I search for the site:domain.com on Google i see 6000 indexed pages, but Google display only 145 of them. Page 15 of the serp's is the last one. No omitted results or duplicate pages. What do you think is happening?

    This:
    a business directory site
Directory type sites don't rank. Google don't want them; searchers don't want them. Google and searchers want to go direct to what they are looking for, not to them via directory.

I can't agree about that. Directory sites are very useful (not talking about crappy sites which doesn't offer useful info)
Suppose you search for Handyman in Chicago.Google will return some good resutls but will return also articles, news,images...If you search on directory like Yelp, you can find exactly what you are looking for. The companies are sorted by customer reviews which will help you identify the best of them in your area. In our directory each company profile has also streetview, get directions field, nearby streets, nearby stations which will help users to find the company address easily.

Not according to Google's analysis of searcher behavior!

You can disagree all you like with me, but its what Google is doing. Wishful thinking does not get a site ranked. Why else are you not ranking?

Let the facts speak - just make a search on Google UK for any business type, any UK location ( e.g.: plumbers in enfiled). In 99% of the searches you will see business directories on the top of SERP's (mostly Yell and Yelp). That means business directories are still favored by Google.

          I'm asking same question

How is that a fact? Its means that Google considers Yelp more relevant to the search query than specific plumber sites for that query.

To counter your "fact" I could cite any number of searchers for local terms in which directories do not show up. Google has been demphasizing directories in the local search results for some time now. Ask any "expert" in local search.

You can continue to beleive your belief and use confirmation biases to confirm it, but its not going to help get your site ranked.

Gotta agree with CBPayne. I'm trying to think of the last time I came across a niche directory site ranking higher than their relevant authority directory site counterparts.

You spent the last three years on that?
      Well, things have changed!

You call yelp a business directory?
I would never go on yelp to find a business. I would go to yelp,
      maybe, AFTER finding a business.

I make a good soda that is dang better than Coca Cola.
So what? I aint got millions to market it.

Real value, duplicate filter, meta data, optimized, is meaningless blah blah blah.

Scrap it. Sure, 3 years down the drain, but cut your losses. Don't make it 4.
