I'm planning to start a blog. I'm reserving the main domain for a product or business later on. Meanwhile should I start a blog as a subdirectory or subdomain?

What's the pros and cons from an SEO perspective (or any other reasons)

Thanks!

Start the blog as a subdirectory, e.g. domain.com/blog. If you do it this way, the blog will benefit from any authority the main domain garners and your blog post will receive more traffic.

A subdomain is treated as a seperate web entity, however, link juice can easily be swished around from subdomain to main domain.

A lot of people strongly recommend a subdirectory over subdomain for all circumstances, but it should be taken on a case by case basis. Subdirectory would win the majority of the time but in cases where you really do want a seperation of different areas of the site a subdomain may be more desirable.

An example would be a large general website with totally unrelated sections of the site. This can be seperated (sort of like a silo) more effectively using subdomains.

For your application, I'd say subdirectory.

Hey Emp, there is any different between Subdomain vs Subdirectory when is about ranking on Google. What I recommend you is use a subdirectory, but if you have a large site use subdomain.

Thanks guys! If I use a sub directory, would the url become too long, and affect Seo?
    Domain.com/blog/article-name

      Domain.com/blog/article-name
Nope. If you change your permalinks setting to "post name", the URL would be in this format: domain.com/article-title

I'd go with the subdirectory. Though for practical reasons, you might choose a subdomain, just to be able to keep all your files in one place. Everyone has their own reason for doing this. If it's SEO related, then you should really keep the blog on site as all that constantly updated content is really a good SEO technique.

Sub-directory is best for a blog with a main business or corporate website. I also use sub directory for my business website blog.

hi thanks for all the suggestions. Seems that subdirectory is the way to go.

Should i install wordpress in the subdirectory? and leave the main folder for my website?
or should i install wordpress in the main directory? then create a category called blog, so the url would be domain.com/blog/postname

    Thanks!

The main purpose of your website is to sell your existing product. So, put the Wordpress blog on a subdirectory and leave the main directory for your product. After all, the only reason you are installing the blog is as an easy way to update the website to get fresh content onto the site and tell others to visit the main page to purchase your product.

This is from 2012, but Matt Cutts pretty much said it doesn't matter either way from an SEO perspective -

I would also go with /blog... It's also more easier to remember as in the History (of the browser) the user can start typing your website address and if doesn't know for example if it's BLOG or BLOGS (for example! ), then they would visit your main website, while in the other case (they should start with BLOG and then follow your main address!
