Why is this site ranking?

Hey there,

Totally new here and hoping to learn from all your expertise! I'm learning about/doing keyword research and was under the impression that google recently de-indexed or at least massively dropped rankings of sites with questionable backlinks.

Tonight while in Market Samurai I saw best-whiteningtoothpaste.net is ranking #2 for "best whitening toothpaste" ahead of older sites with much more authority. Looks like just sketchy blog post backlinks.

Any idea why this site would still be ranking? Is it just a matter of time before it gets toasted or is my understanding of SEO way off (probably the case!).

Appreciate any expertise you could share, thanks!

Nick

  • The site ranking depends on these things-
content richness, page authority, keyword density, back links, exit links, traffic, and search demand.
These are all calculated by some math equation. These equations are different in different search engines.

    • + Domain Authority and Good On-Page and Off-Page SEO too!
  • Nick,

it is just a matter of time, when google update his algorithm which includes this type of search query "best whitening toothpaste" you might see some different results.
  • Sites like that don't last too long on the first page. It's the type of site that Google targets with each algorithm update. You can also replicate the strategies used on that site and rank yours as well if you want short-term gains.

    • Aside from the terrible backlinks to this best whitening website, what is it about this site that raises red flags? You're making me nervous as many of my sites look incredibly similar to this one (including the WordPress theme lol).
  • Very helpful guys. Care to explain why you come up with this conclusion?
  • That's not totally depend on the page authority and domain authority, other factors are also invloved in it. like Social media. Social media marketing also impact on search engine visibility. so that might be reason for that website to rank. may be you should see that backlinks to investigate further.

    • People judge that site because they are mistaken how google and the
      internet work.

Google cannot be put in a box. People who try, fail.

You yourself have some mental picture of the box you
have put google in, and that's why you can't figure out
why or how a site ranks.

You think google is some internet police robot that is looking for
sites to take down. They are not. They do not have a checklist
for ranking sites that one can follow.

There are many tipoffs as to why that site ranks.
It is a keyphrase that google gives little thought
      to.

It's not anything to wonder or worry about.

Besides, if I wanted whitening toothpaste, it's spot on.
      Another tipoff.

  • Looks like a lot of shady methods have been used to rank this site.
  • Here it is a detailed google positioning for various keywords, and almost all the links to the website ( visible links ) together with anchors, etc.

This would be something like a hit and run strategy. The problem with this is that you won't stay under the radar for a too long time, but if the method is quick, you can rinse and repeat it, knowing that it will work a while. The issue is that if you base all your work on something like that, you will end up caught with your pants down.

    • LOL what makes you believes that this site will not stay long on the first page? Do you have a solid argument to backup your claim?

The owner of this site is obviously knew what he is doing, and to be honest most of those people who are saying that this kind of site will not stay long in it's current position have no real idea how to rank a website.
  • This blog is an Amazon affiliate site but it has good content (or at least lengthy articles). Only thin affiliate blogs are being targeted by Google, such as those blogs which have very little original content other than what's being provided by the affiliate sales site.

Two thoughts occur to me on this specific site. SEO concerns aside, they are not using email marketing as there is no place to sign up for an email list. So the site is relying on one off traffic from Google; always a big mistake. At minimum, the site owner could have a free report such as 'top 10 ten tips to relieve sensitive tooth pain'. That's a place to start.

Also, most people shop for toothpaste in a local store or online pharmacy/shop, not through a reviews blog. So, we can't really be sure that site is profitable.
