To make an awesome Keyword research you are going to need more than one SEO tool.

First you will need a keywords lists, you can get awesome queries based on Search Volume from Google Keyword Planner and Ubersuggest, both free. Or use a paid tool like Semrush that gives also information about your competence.

Google Keyword Planner will also gives you the Search Volume and CPC from each keyword. This is very important because the Benefit of a keyword is = Search Volume * CPC.

Okey, with that info you will get a normal Keyword Research, if you want Rock, you will need to analyze the Opposition Score of each Keyword, and you can do it with Moz.

The opposition score show you how much difficult is rank for a keyword on Google, based in the competence.

When you have the opposition and benefit score, you finally can calculate the real benefit of keyword = Benefit/Opposition.

Tools: Ubersuggest, Moz, Google Keyword Planner and Semrush

To add to your list, you might wanna check out the new Serpstat tool. It's also a nice powerful tool for competitor analysis and keyword research. Bearing a question tracking algorithm, with which you can use to know what your prospects are asking about your brand on the search engines. SEMrush is a great tool just like this one, that I still have top in my tool list.
And just like you said, I don't do keyword research with just one tool. I use All that will benefit what I do.

Keyword planner is a good tool for me. However, there are lots of other ways via which you can research for good keywords, for instance, you can observe the keywords used in your competitors website, google auto correct suggestions and much more.

It depends a little what market you are targeting and if you want to think outside the box.

If you are targeting physical products, then I find that Amazon.com Movers & Shakers: The biggest gainers in Amazon sales rank over the past 24 hours is a great place to start for ideas.

The two keyword tools I would recommend without a second thought are Long Tail Pro and Keyword Advantage by Adam Short. I personally use Keyword Advantage and it's definitely a great research tool.

As for Long Tail Pro, I know a lot of marketers give it very favorable reviews and have switched to it after using Market Samurai for a long time. (No disrespect to MS intended.)

Some people are confusing Google Adword keyword planner with regular keyword tools. Please keep in mind that Google Adword keyword planner is for AdWord campaign planning and not for Organic SEO. I personally recommend the WordTracker as it saves a lot of time.

If you want to dominate Google, my suggestion is Google Keyword Planner!

For me Google provide an accurate data for their users. I have rank many sites just using a Google Keyword Planner.

The important thing is how you use that keyword on link building process! It's no advantage if you have an expensive tool but the way you do a backlink is suck!!!

I would check out the Niche Finder by Brad Callen. That's the program that I bought. It helped me get a lot of easy keywords. The only problem with that program is that it can become unbelievably slow. It can be a nightmare but other than that it works great when everything is loaded up. It really does save you tons of time. It is frustrating checking all of your competition one by one and doing analysis of backlinks yourself.
