Does Google recognize same product in multiple collections?

Such as in Shopify for example. Shopify says this is no problem - Webmater Tools shows duplicate meta descriptions and duplicate title tags for around 50-60 products from being in a few collections.

Do you think this is likely not a problem with Google even if they show that under html improvements section?

I think it could be a problem if you are syndicating your products on ebay, amazon or with affiliates as well and you have the kind of on-site problems highlighted here.

I'd say Google will get it right most of the time but I'd recommend you avoid the uncertainty and fix any HTML suggestions in the Webmaster Tools.

Html improvements in webmaster tools are just suggestions. You can ignore them if you want to as they can only have a very low impact on your rankings, if any. I generally ignore them unless they are relatively important and need to be addressed.
