eCommerce Start Up - First Steps

Hi All,

It's been a while...I was a member on this forum back in 2007-ish, when I was employed at a boutique local marketing agency...registered under a different email and u/n from a previous employer. In any event, I've landed in a marketing seat for a new ecommerce operation.

Back in the day, article marketing and automated link-building was enough to see results pretty quickly. Starting fresh, for an ecomm operation with a blank slate, what are the most effective current SEO strategies to see results rather quickly? Does article marketing still hold any relevancy?

Bear in mind that I am a one-person marketing team, with limited resources and a small budget...but this business has the potential and margins to make for a great opportunity. I really want to impress them, and drive revenue as quickly as possible...then again, so does everyone else.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi and welcome back

Content marketing and backlink strategies are still used, even in the automatic way. I would say the easiest way is sticking to it but following the new paradigm: inbound marketing.
Just try to make links that are useful for people reading them and create content that attracts people. It's all about making useful unique things. I guess you have something that makes your business unique, use it, focus on that and you'll see results.

    Hope it helps.

Forget off-site SEO - work on your on-page optimization first.

Work on quality, unique product descriptions for every single product in your store, along with some high quality, relevant blog posts.

Once all of your on-page optimization is in place, you can then worry about off-site marketing. Sending items to bloggers for review tends to be a good way to generate a buzz around your site. Hiring a PR company or a PR freelancer could also be a good way to generate buzz in relevant magazines and other sections of the media.

Before you worry about building links, article marketing and all of those other things though, I'd pump your site full of quality content. You'll find it ranks very well, very fast.
