Many of us put a lot of time, effort, and sometimes expense into building up our backlinks. But do you know what you're getting?

Not all links get indexed, and not all links accrue to you.

For instance, many Blogger blogs won't give you the backlinks you might think you're getting. Ditto for many Social Bookmarking sites.

If you're not using Google Webmaster Tools, your driving 'blind', and almost certainly not optimizing your efforts.

Some Tips:
  • If your objective is to boost your Google SERPS, focus your efforts on Webmaster Tools rather than Yahoo Site Explorer. Don't assume that if a links shows up in Yahoo Site Explorer, that it's also showing up in Webmaster Tools. Not all of them do.

  • Check your incoming links in Webmaster Tools often.

  • If you're putting effort into a certain area, and it isn't showing up in Webmaster Tools after a period of time, re-direct those efforts elsewhere. For instance, I used to create a Blogger blog for each 'money' site in order to funnel backlinks. Well, even after many months, not all of them show up in Webmaster Tools. So I take those posts, turn them into articles to submit, and drop the blog.

  • When I see a Blogger blog show up, I make sure to add a 'blog list' or 'link list' gadget and list all my main sites. Ditto for Squidoo. And speaking of Squidoo, make sure to list your 'important' sites in your profile, since they do get indexed.

  • Maximize the links you see. For example, if you see a blog, forum, or Social Bookmarking site show up in Webmaster Tools, put more effort there. Make sure you're bookmarking all your sites and all your pages on the SB sites, forums, blogs, etc. that are showing in Webmaster Tools.

  • Keep in mind that backlinks can take time for Google to find them. However, if they haven't shown up in a month, they probably aren't going to.

  • Leverage your competitions backlinking efforts. Use Yahoo Site Explorer to look at their backlinks. When you see forums, blogs, SB sites, etc., click on the link and see if you can get a link there too. Chances are good that these are links that are contributing to their ranking.
