What do you think about this keyword (Statistics)

Hello,

Been out of the game for a few years, thought I might try my hand at it again though. My question is in relation to choosing keywords, I guess a lot has changed over the past few years with better methods of selecting your niche. What I plan to do is build a niche site, (I remember the good days of BANS and when EPN was open for everybody, this doesn't seem to be the case anymore so I plan on using Amazon.

I spent to better part of the last two hours researching (Based on old techniques) the best keywords, I would like your opinion on the following statistics;

Adwords Planner produce;

Main keyword country specific, UK: 2400 ave monthly searches with a suggested bid of £0.46
Main keyword worldwide: 6,600 with £0.71
'watch name' - keyword worldwide: 440 with £0.86

Looking at the results page after putting my keyword into google the competition is mostly from the actual company website for the product, amazon, ebay a few youtube videos etc so breaking into the first page with an affiliate website will be tough, I should have the uk specific keyword domain name also, so my market will be the UK.

Are there any nice pdf books (free) for choosing keywords/niches, I remember BANS used to have a few nice tutorials from the members of the forums on finding nice niches.

So if you have some feedback that would be great,

    Using Google monthly searches alone is a very shakey way to do market research. Many will tell you that Google's numbers are way off reality - others will say they are completely useless.

    I think a better overall strategy is to get inside your particular market in question and observe carefully what is going on. See what authority sites, forums, and news sites are talking about. See what groups are cropping up in the niche. See what ebay, Amazon, and other ecommerce sites are selling in the niche. See what magazines exist for the fans and businesses in the niche. Join in the conversations and become an active player in your own niche and you will begin to understand the types of products and services that are being requested.

    Hello Steve, Thanks for the reply, I know the pitfalls of googles statistics and this was just one method that I remembered from all those years ago, I had other really good methods but I forgot the names of the programmes and they have probably been replaced with more sophisticated programmes.

    Regarding your second point, I plan on doing all those things once I find my preferred niche, I need to be motivated by the product otherwise I get bored and effort levels quickly drop off. So at the moment I'm just toying with different keywords in google and just trying to get an overall feel for the potential of the product.

    What worked well for me before was (very briefly outlined)

    Finding a keyword with certain characteristics, that is

    Finding keywords which matched my set of rules such as having over xxxx monthly searches with a decent click through rate, I used various tools for estimating these, I think I had about 3-4 tools for setting the criteria which I have subsequently forgot the names of.

    I liked products in the range of £50-300 in leisure industries especially industries aimed at the middle class who had disposable income. This gave me reasonable returns from EPN.

    I also like having the keywords in the domain, country specific (a lot harder these days)

    I once had a website selling Hybrid Golf Clubs, or a certain type of hybrid golf clubs, quite a saturated market but was full of people who built BANS websites and it was quite easy to overtake the competition, I ranked quite highly making a nice profit as I offered a lot more. Back in those days people would just through up a website and pray it does well.

    Anyways, any feedback on what I might be missing or should be looking for would be appreciated, also if you can recommend some of the tools you might think I have forgotten about that would be great. As I mentioned I've been gone a while so just having to relearn everything
