Converting HTML to WordPress/Pages to Posts

I am finally getting around to updating an old HTML website that has found some new life from the updated Penguin update, and I wanted to ask your opinion on the structure for SEO purposes.

The current site is HTML and DOES NOT utilize a blog. I want to update to WordPress and use a blog post set up for all new content added. Therefore, migrating the content will change.

Should I set up the structure initially to mimic exactly what I have now, ie: content on pages rather than posts and then add the content in as posts and redirect with 301's, the pages to the new posts?

OR should I just move it all in to posts and set up the 301 redirects right away?

Obviously I want to minimize as much loss in traffic and rankings as possible. I have held back on doing this conversion for over a year because of this uncertainty. I do have something coming in with Google Adsense and the site wasn't penalized, but I was nowhere on the top ten pages. Now I am on the second page for my primary keyword again and gaining more in Adsense. I don't want to lose it.

I appreciate any experienced SEO advise you can offer. Thanks for your help!

Pages versus posts does not matter. They are both just HTML/PHP output.

You absolutely want to 301 redirect each URL to its corresponding new URL. That will limit any ranking loss. You may see your rankings jump around a bit after doing this, until Google recrawls the whole site and incorporates all the new data.

    I agree with MikeFriedman

What you're facing is more a question of usability. Of course ,usability affects SEO, but what you have to think to see if you make the changes 1 per 1 or all together is if that content is relevant for your new website to be useful.
Wether to use pages or blog posts, is also a matter of usability. Do they need to be accessible in menus? Then pages. Is topical content? Then blog posts.

    Hope it helps
