Did social media make my pages rank?

My organic traffic from google has increased dramatically over the past 6 months and my pages are ranking high in google search results. I have not done any SEO work at all on the site and I am trying to figure out what is making this happen.

One thing we did start doing last year was placing giveaways on our site using the Prize Magnet widget. We are then driving traffic from our social media (mainly facebook) to the pages in our site where we have placed the widget. This is our facebook page for reference (TheCowboyShopOnline).

What I am wanting to know is if all the interaction we are getting on social media is causing the big jump in traffic from google?

When we make a post on facebook that is linking to the page with the Prize Magnet widget we usually get 150 plus shares and about 300 post likes. We also gained about 50K facebook fans this year. My second question is if there is a social component to google rankings is it because of the distribution of my links through the shares or do the post likes and comments play a part?

Social media does not make your pages rank.

You make it sound as if people must like and share a post to
    enter a contest.

That is a violation of FB terms.

Every single FB post is the same contest post...over and over....you
seem to post the same thing daily.

Pity the fools who keep liking, sharing, then entering.

No doubt everyone on FB is trying to win boots.

I did a quick look at the link profile on the domain, there's a few links. If your ranking it's from followed links, not social. I have no idea what keywords your targeting.

This is sort of off topic but related to FB, check out the business model for Lolly Wolly Doodle (weird name, very successful).

Thanks for looking at the link profile yukon. We took over this site about a year and a half ago and have done no seo (link building) at all. The only links that are their are old and I would have no idea what keywords they are targeting.

If your ranking it's from followed links, not social.
So are you saying that there is no social media component to SEO?

I looked at Lolly Wolly Doodle. That is an interesting story.

Actually according to facebook guidelines you can ask people to like, share, and comment on posts. If you will notice our posts say "Then visit ______ to enter". Our giveaways are not hosted on facebook so according to facebook guidelines their rules do not apply. They encourage users to host giveaways off of facebook.

It works. It drives tons of traffic and make sales. I cannot argue with something that work.

Of course you can....but you can't tell them to like or share you
to enter a contest or be rewarded.

But then, as always, people don't read all the sentence.

"Win Nocona Boots! Like and Share, then visit to enter."

That lines makes it seem, again, as if you need to like/share before you can enter the
          contest. Completely against FB rules.

I think the facebook rules do not say anything about making it "seem" to require action for entry. I will have my attorneys look at it again and we may re word it. Thanks for the advice. Don't want to mess up something that is working so well!

Thank you for the advice Paul! We changed up what we are saying in our posts and it is working even better. It is driving more visits to the site because now they fully understand they have to go enter at the site. So far the likes, shares, and comments are as good or better than before.
            Thanks!!!

            Win Nocona Boots in January!
Let your friends know with a like, share or comment.
            Then visit (url) to enter.

All that social activity probably generated some backlinks to your site and that is probably the reason behind the surge in traffic. Social links can't and don't rank sites because they are nofollowed.

Have you checked if you gained backlinks without actually building them yourself over such a period?

We have only gained 13 back links sense the first of last year. Most of them are either directories or some of them are where we have sponsored events and received a link for our sponsorship. No real high quality links.

I was wrong when I stated earlier that we had only gotten 13 back links. I went back to google webmaster tools and it appears we have a bunch of links to our products from pinterest that I did not know about. Could that be what has made the difference?

I don't know the official anwer from Google (no one does), but I did find that when I linked my FB page (with lots of likes and activity) to my website, the traffic I got from searches went up a lot. So, even though I've been told social media pages don't do anything for your PR or SEO, I'm not sure if I believe it.

Yes I found one person here with positive answear, I do not know and I am not saying that I know all the things but when my blog is liked and share on social sites than I found my blog search position on 1st and 2nd page. In other hand I have some blogs which do not have likes and sharing much more. Its not even 100. not tell , why should I not believe over these facts. same thing is not working with all people. so

All I know is we went from about 2,400 organic visits per month last year to over 6,000 organic visits per month this year. The content on the site has not changed much at all and we only gained 13 insignificant back links. The only thing that changed was social. We also went from 1,200 visits a month from social to over 16,000 visits per month from social this year.

Why you still focus on PR while it's dead now. Google has confirmed they are no longer update PR anymore and it seems not to be a factor to help you get ranked.

    Hi,

Mattcutt's already announced about Page Rank. There is no pr update from Google. So no need expect pr update. Targeting good rankings for search engines is a reasonable idea i think.

Yes why not, because social media is one of the biggest source for traffic & more traffic is the main key to increase rank.
