Link funnelling with link bait

I am producing a link-bait campaign for a client.

I would like to know if I should run the link-bait campaign on a separate domain and then clean & redirect the link juice to the client's site with a single link on the page?

The subject matter of the link-bait campaign is in the same genre as the client but mostly likely won't be getting the keywords we are after. But has the potential to generate many links. After the campaign has run, we can revise the copy on the link-bait page to be geared more towards the keywords.

Is it better for the link profile to add say 1,000 equity links (of various keywords) to the link-bait page on the clients site (an internal links of the corresponding keywords) or have 1,000 links to a separate domain and funnel them with a single targeted link to the client's homepage?

Eg.
Subject genre of link-bait and client's site: Widget
Keyword client is after: How to make a widget device
Click-bait topic: A type-of-widget

or another way to explain:
Subject genre: Automobiles
Keyword for client: How to sell a truck
Click-bait topic: Cars
