Not that it really matters anymore, but I thought this was cool....

Today I got the itch to start a new hobby website. If it becomes popular, then great. Whatever. It's about a little passion of mine.

So i went to Godaddy and my first instinct was to look up a very commonly-used phrase for my niche, expecting disappointment. I mean, it just had to be taken, right?

However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was actually available, which I found odd.

So I happily registered the domain for 99 cents and whatnot. About 3 hours after setting up the new site, I also noticed that the domain is actually PR2 as well.

So yeah, "common URL phrases" and PageRank don't really matter anymore, but I still consider myself lucky to have found this little gem on the first try, and completely by accident.

Has anyone ever grabbed a domain with a certain status purely by chance?

Now I'm wondering if I should put it up for auction. Sh*t.

I picked up a two word EMD for $10 with 30K traffic estimate on Google Keyword Planner. No spammy links & Wayback history shows a small legit site. The link profile isn't impressive but I'll take care of that with my own existing network of similar sites + organic links for this niche (free downloads) are easy.

Building out the site right now...

      NICE, way to go!
My domain is hit and miss, I think. It's a two-word domain, just like yours, but I think it's far less attractive due to fewer monthly searches (fewer than 100).

That being said, the phrase is just emerging because this "phenomenon" is just starting to shape up slowly. That might explain the low searches. For now it's more of a phrase you hear more coming out of people's mouths than anything else. Hopefully it'll become far more popular later on in actual searches.

I'll have to do more research on it, in case I put it up for sale after all.

Back in the day when customizing facebook was a big thing with apps I bought facebooklayours.org for $10 - couldn't believe it. Hundreds of thousands of searches, I ranked it and made a few hundred a day for a long time then traded the site / domain for something but don't remember what...

That's awesome! For me it seems like its always the opposite. I can never get the domain name I want with the words that I want. I usually settle for something less but I guess that's just the name of the game. I think I spend way too much time trying to find that perfect domain.

    Nice

    Whenever I find a domain that I'm surprised nobody's registered, it's listed at > $1000.

There's a variation of the name selling for $3,000 right now. Same monthly searches as mine (fewer than 100), but contains three words (whereas mine contains two). I might put it up for bidding just to see what kind of reactions/numbers I get.

        Sweet.

Might even want to consider trying Flippa, if the 3 word domain is going for that much.

Have you checked the backlink profile? Every time I have found a domain like you described, it was just a burned out domain name hammered by some SEO with bad intentions. Hopefully the domain doesn't have a penalty or bad links. If not then I say congrats!
