Turning My Small Niche Sites Into A Bigger Niche

I have quite a bunch of smallish niche sites that make decent money from Amazon but I want to grow to a larger site, however with niche specific domain names I don't want to build it up on one of the existing domains.

What do you think of redirecting my niche domains to the categories of my new to build authority site? Good idea or better leave them as they are and start from zero with the new site / domain.

Why 301, when your sites are already ranking and expectantly making money?
Would it not be better just to now treat those money sites as a great looking PBN?
You would be getting the same juice from a link as you would 301 no?

So now those ranking pages will all rank your new authority site, giving you multi serp listings, meaning even more traffic and hopefully

    Hey Niko,

If your niche site is a big brand and you have a community of readers and a big email list, then this might be a concern.

But if it's just a small niche site ranking well and getting most of its traffic from Google, then I don't think you should worry about what it says in the domain name, and just build it out on there.

Start with a new domain, remove all the affiliate links from all the smaller domains, feed all the traffic into the new domain with links on the small feeder sites.

That gives you SEO (links) + direct traffic the day the new domain goes live.

Very bad idea. Redirecting will not transfer all of your previous rankings to the new site. You will lose a ton of organic traffic doing this.

I would say keep your current niche sites as is and build a new site with the big picture in mind. Let those small sites keep acquiring traffic and making money while you build out your new authority site. Doesn't mean you have to avoid those topics with your authority site either, why not get multiple rankings for the same keywords on different sites.

Bad idea indeed I guess, thought I could just pass all the rankings and add some PPC campaign to drive even more traffic to the authority site. PPC wouldn't work with the smallish sites right now.

Dennis, your idea will work absolutely fine. I should have said that first maybe, Yeah, that kind of move is even legit enough to do in WMT as a site move. It's WH in anyone's eyes.

The point I was making is that you will end up with the exact same SERP's positions with the new auth site using 301's, as you would just doing contextual links from the group of niche sites. So the way Yuk and I was suggesting, lets you keep the existing traffic, and the new auth site traffic.

What about bounce rates? First x% leaves the small site right away, then they end up on a new site that they might not like and another percentage of them bounces once again, not much traffic left that way.

If I would keep the old site as it is I would link to the new site from a link building perspective and keep it monetized with Amazon, otherwise I expect to lose even more.

Honestly nik0, I would not do the 301 redirect. I would say rank them both. You can put links from the old site to the new site. Or not. Monetize them both.

I look at page one as real estate. I want to own as much of the block as I can. If I get two sites ranking on page one, so much the better.

Oh, and one other thing as far as the 301 redirect idea, it probably would not make much sense in your situation if you did want to do that. I'm guessing almost 100% of the links you built are from your network sites. Since a 301 redirect does not transfer 100% of the linkjuice, you would be better off just switching the links since you control the sites.

Unless you are worried about that setting off some alarms somewhere.

Ranking takes long these days so switching links would take a long time to gain new rankings, while with a redirect it's almost instantly. The idea was also to pass the needed trust so that other pages on the authority site might rank faster as well. No idea if it will work like that though.

First I'll run some other tests to see if there are ways to get a domain to rank quicker for medium competitive terms instead of half a year.

Meanwhile you lose every single ranked position the old sites have. No ranked pages, no traffic, starting over.

In comparison, leaving the old sites intact, you have traffic on the first day the new domain goes live.

Seems like a no brainer to me (use the old sites for traffic + SEO).

  • Why would you 301 a site that's already a hands-off cash cow ?! If you can rank these 'self claimed' smaller niche sites, you'd have no problem outranking them with an authority site aswell.

I have a couple of sites on page 1 for the same keyword. It's just a low competition, low searched for keyword, but both of the sites make a constant small-ish income. If 'searchers' are anything like me, I don't suppose they'll buy or be satisfied by the first review they read.

Your sites could end up complementing each other when one fails to satisfy the reader.. who'd then jump onto another site.

    Just my 2 cents !

Pretty much nails they "why?" question on the head.

You could even go one step further by dropping Amazon altogether, and setting up your own drop shipping site which covers all products you're reviewing. If you could deliver on sales, I'm sure you could figure that out. Then use the new authority review site to funnel juice and direct traffic to the sales page of your drop ship e-commerce site. Then you are on the right path.

After that, you head East to China and begin to design and manufacture your own brand of products. You can juice that up directly from your e-commerce platform and so on, until you own the company who manufactures the electrical components, that go into everything. Juice that up from the components company, then move into mergers and acquisitions.

Buy out Bing, Yahoo and Google.

      Then Relax.

Buy Pattaya, and turn it into the worlds biggest roller disco.

        Kevin is getting carried away

Last year I had some plans to go to China, till I realized dimensions and weight of my niches kind of conflicted with my profit margins, What a freaking thiefs at Amazon with their shipping costs.

Really, how can one sell a speedbike for $179 when the shipping costs for such thing are $100+. The model costs about $40-$50 to produce in China, then their are 30% anti-dump fees, 15% import taxes, shipping costs from China to US. All together to get the model in the states you're already $80 lighter as an absolute minimum.

Oh almost forgot 15% commission for Amazon and storage + handling costs.

        Something sketchy going on there.

And yes they offer FREE shipping :s

I agree, using them for back link purposes would work also.

I was actually referring to the point you made in the opening post where you claimed that niche sites were 'smallish'

I suppose you misunderstood that for you being the drop-shipper maybe?
