Why Isn't Social Bookmarking Giving Me Backlinks?

I have a site on a hobby of mine that's over 6 months old. I've written several articles a while ago and I'm just now starting to social bookmark them. It's the first site I've social bookmarked and I'm getting very discouraged, as I've used SocialMarker to bookmark some of the articles on over 20 social bookmarking websites, and the only backlink(according to SEOQuake and Yahoo! site explorer) I've gotten from them is from Digg, and I have one linkdomain from Propeller. The rest of the backlinks are from random search engine strings or forum postings that I also did a while back.

I've waited a few days even and there are still no backlinks whatsoever from all of the effort(actually, it's not much effort.. but still, it's frustrating when something seemingly so simple can't even go your way). Any advice or ideas on what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Jake Daly

To get them to show up a bit faster, try to ping the bookmarks after you place them.

Be patient, sometimes it takes weeks for them to actually "show up".

You're not doing anything wrong. It takes time for your backlinks to show up....relax. And do MORE bookmarks while you are waiting. Or you could always pay someone here on the WF to do it for you for less than $10.00

backlinks won't show up overnight - it can take months sometime, if it at all. This is why I think the "too many links too fast" theory is false - google does not find those links all at once.

That is indeed a good point that I guess many people overlook - that google does not find those links everyday all at once.

Well, besides bookmarking them, it will help that if you join a program like Ken Fry's SocialBookmarking 101 that has a group of people constantly bookmarking your site. I recieved quite a lot of backlinks this way.

  • I've found that it helps if other people are also bookmarking, with the bookmarks growing at some organic rate. Of course Google's going to pick up on it if you're bookmarking your own stuff all over the place and nobody else is.

    Stumble campaign, anyone?

One thing you have to realize is that not all Social Bookmarks are "do follow".

Take a look at socialmarker.com and click on the "do follow" button. It will give you a list of social bookmark sites that will provide you with a backlink.

      Adam,
Do-Follow or No-Follow - Either one will still give you a backlink and only google half pays that attribute attention. This is one reason why you ping your profiles and bookmarks.. A great deal of many people miss out on sales and traffic by ignoring the sites that are No-Follow.

For social bookmarking to really work, quantity is key although quality (PR) of backlink do play a part as well. You need to submit to more social bookmarking sites. Use free tools like onlywire n getbookmark to help u quickly get backlinks. There are also many many tools out there u can try. I agree with what many have been re-iterating, that effect of social bookmarking will not come fast.

I've used onlywire and have noticed, with months of waiting, that almost none show up other than Digg, Jumptags, and Propeller so with my newer sites that's all I bookmark them to.

I've checked Google, Bing, and Yahoo backlinks and still none show up other than those 3.

Unfortunately I can't give you a link, but I was reading a thread here at WF yesterday that indicated that Google only shows a very small number of your back links. Yahoo shows much more but even they only show a percentage of them. They both freely admit this fact. I don't know anything about Bing, but my guess is they are the same. The reasons are that they don't want people to be able to figure out their algorithm.

So don't believe everything you see when you check your favorite back link utility. There is no way that any of them are going to give you the truth, because the source of this data hides the information.

Yes. Google always shows very small number of links in comparison with Yahoo. You can get your backlinks in Google but no one can guarantee you that when they'll appear.

it takes some days for Yahoo to show the links and Y will not even show you a 100% total. also not all links are equal as explained above.
