Expired Domains - Questions

I don't know if I should be discussing this in public and I might p*** off the SEO pros here or not or if this is already a well known SEO strategy, however I wanted some feedback on using expired domains for SEO.

Here's what my shopping spree's been like:

I went out buying over 30 expired domains all with PRs in between 3-6 only to realize none of them had any backlinks or only had a few irrelevant backlinks. I never figured out how they got their PR ... perhaps redirection. In any case I 301'nd them all to my money site, but without avail. (mind you I'm only a noob)

Figured out, this was all a futile effort and having just PR was no good. What I needed was link juice. Link juice passes on link juice.

So I started looking out for domains with PR and backlinks and recently Domain and Page Authorities to eventually find out that the domains with authority are way too expensive so the $10 USD and ranking strategy don't work as claimed by the recent articles.

So before I pay $5,000 USD for a SINGLE high authority domain that has dmoz and other prime listings, quality backlinks from awesome sources and all those shenanigans, I want to know if this is going to be worth it? If the domain lands me on the first pages I don't mind paying 5k for the domain because my Adword spend for the keyword is way more so I'm most likely to break-even on my investment within 15 days PROVIDED if that domain gets me the required results so again what I want to know is if there is a good possibility?

Since I know you guys would want me to be more specific in order to give a more precise answer, here are the details:

My targeted keywords are very competitive and very expensive on Adwords. Some of them, just to give you guys an idea are:

Web design, web development, web designers, web designers uk/ny/ca/etc, mobile application development, android application development, iphone app development etc.

My domain at the moment has 33 DA / 43 PA and is listed on Dmoz, Yahoo business and has a very solid portfolio of high quality backlinks including authentic links from .gov and .edu domains. My rank increase has been consistent and I have managed to sustain these rankings throughout. I'm already on 2-4 page for some of the above mentioned keywords.

The domain that I'm planning on buying is relevant to my niche, has quality backlinks from over 2000+ domains, has 52 DA and 61 PA.
