Let's say I want to start selling SEO services. How do you get that very first customer without anything to show them, as far as previous results go?

For example, if I approach a lead and say, "Hey pay me to get your site on the first page of Google." they will probably ask to see results...but if I don't have any previous customers with results to show, what should I do?

just have determination. You could easily get rejected 20 times before you get someone who's interested. All the hard work will pay off when you'v got your first gig finished and now have a portfolio !

Offer to do it free at first

    However qualify the client first

    a) make sure they are a serious business with money to spend
    b) Make sure they have a website that indicates that they are serious about their we b presence

and finally make sure the free period has a defined cutt of at which time they will be expected to pay.

for eg...after the site has jumped two pages or hits second page or first page etc.

I am setting up a relative in this space using this strategy and it works great. the key is in qualifying the client AND you actually have to know up to date SEO

I agree starting for free first is a good method for somebody to trust you.
A better option in my opinion is to help a friend or a non profit. There's a huge amount of people whose business or organizations need better visibility. You can make yourself a portfolio and help somebody in the same time, win-win.

Make sure you make it very professionally and you keep track of KPI and your efforts.

Why are you getting into a line of work that you haven't produced results for?

    1. Make your own example site, show that your concepts and practices work.

    2. As said above, offer services for free and show that your concepts and practices work.

If you can rank a site, then rank your site first and make money. You might even drop the idea of selling seo service!

I agree to trying it for free but you have to make sure it is worth working with. Once results are in, the company would be willing to pay you then. You just need to make sure they have funds and the company is stable.

Or you can go with the non profit organization and make their sites rank. That should be a great addition to your portfolio.
