        Good question

everyone uses Google Keyword Planner and so does your competition

personally I stay away from as much competition as possible

in additions many of the keyword tools out there are using old outdated metrics that do not follow what has happened for Google search

I've tested millions and millions of keywords to confirm this

You need to do Keyword Research The Modern Way to get your competitive edge

It has everything to do with authority and building out a big site is not authority much different than what you think

some of you here understand this

anyone interested in understanding this I can point you to resources explaining this

bottom line you need to change with the times it's not 2013 any more when these methods worked

Google's keyword planner and semrush arre my favourite keyword research tools. I use semrush for competition analysis as well since keyword planner is geared towards adwords advertisers competition-wise.

Surprised Long Tail Pro hasn't been mentioned yet...

Google Keyword Planner works well, and of course, it's free. If you're familiar with spreadsheets, you can use the keyword planner to amass VERY large keyword lists.

Long Tail Pro is faster, though, and has now turned into my main go-to keyword tool.

Google keyword planner is the best tool so far. You have various options and can also get an approximate search volume and competition data. I would suggest this tool.

^ I agree, the Google tools are, most of the time, the best to use for your own websites. Just the fact that it a GOOGLE tool should ring a bell as to why it's best to use it hehe

  • Google Keyword Planner is best among all but most important thing is how will you pick the keywords out of the results you are getting from this tool of any other tool. Better work-out on mix bag.. Keywords with more competition, keywords with less competition, localized keywords, long tail keywords with brand name... and then while optimizing the website work out group keywords based on intent and not by matching as it will tell relevancy to Google and is best practice to follow today

I dont think there is any such tool that is the best ofc every tool out there has their own of results that they return but you better stick to the free ones out there as they are more than enough to get you up and running. Google trends is probably one of the sites that many should probably be using but not many talk about it.

Google keyword planner is still the best way to do it for free.
But if you have the funds, you should try out SEMrush. You can even get the keywords of your competitors and see what other keywords they are ranking and lots more

Totally agree with Google Keyword tool. All the other tools take their results from Google anyway.. so why not just consult the source? It's the smartest thing to do, IMO.

I hate hate HATE the way Long Tail Pro is so buggy sometimes and you have to do a kind of a runaround to get it working again, but having said that WHEN it works, it's the best tool for keyword research that I have used.

Yes, it is based on the Google keyword research tool but it presents the information in an easy to decipher and swift manner.

Google Keyword Planner is the best keyword research tool for 2015, but if you want to know the keyword of your competitor then you should use SEMRUSH too.

I don't often use google keyword planner since I am not into ads campaign but I believe it is one of the best keyword research tool for online businesses. On the other hand, google webmasters and google analytics will do too. I highly recommend ubersuggest and google's auto suggest for long tail keyword ideas.

I use LongTailPlatinum this soft is good when works... Everytime i turn it on i need to refresh it few times, change adwords account and support can not help me. Always sending same s@#$ from autoresponder. I also use free version of Traffic Travis for competition analisys.

I also noticed that platinum version of LTP showc different results when you click calculate button than you click analize button for chosen KW. And those differences are huge 0 - 60 so i am thinking to live this software for market samurai- people are saing that it is much slower but i think it depends on the data you would like to know at the moment.
