Stupid question (perhaps) but Private Blog networks are a not a good idea in light of SEO updates?

All SEO experts please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

Many times, they are really easy to trace. How many links can you have from one domain to another before some robot starts to be suspicious.

I have used 5 different networks and I was an original subscriber to Traffic King Pro. The idea is solid and they might work in some way still and maybe there is something I don't understand about them now, but it just seems there are only so many times you can link to a site from one particular domain whose registratin is private. That sounds like a big footprint.

I run a private blog network myself and used to repeat posts over and over each month for clients, we quit with that idea as I ran into the same issues you have, able to link from only so many domains before it started to trigger things in the algorithm.

I'm not so sure whether that's caused by private whois registration or not, Wordpress on itself leaves a footprint as well of course.

I have one specific client that buys the most posts from my network than anyone else, he never gets penalized and he doesn't build any other links.

Few things we can learn from him on how he does things:

      - 50% links to homepage
      - 25% links spread out over multiple categories (3+ categories)
      - 25% links spread out over inner posts (15+ inner posts that is)

On top of that he uses a huge variety of anchor text's and only uses commercial anchors in longtail and exact format on a select number of sites.

So let's say he buys links from 80 domains from me where he only uses URL / generic / brand / LSI anchors and builds links on 10-15 domains (WP as well) he owns himself and only there he uses exact and longtail anchors.

The sites where he didn't take care of such link distribution and anchor variety did tank, all his sites are build up in the same way though, about 35 pages large and well structured.

I think the biggest reason could be link distrubition as no page has links from more then let's say 40 domains.

Private Blog Networks are still the best way to build links for niche affiliate sites but I would steer clear of them for authority sites. You need to be careful, and the safest PBN is your private PBN. Publicly used PBNs aren't that safe.

It is hard to compete with the big boys with
      just content.

PBN's work but they have their risks. But what
      strategy doesn't?

The problem with PBN's there at risk of being shut down by Google?

    Is that true..

Yes its true but you are MUCH less likely to be shut down, deindexed and money site penalized if you get or build your own.

For the safest option you should own your own PBN and use it just for yourself. Service providers renting links on their PBN to anyone signing up are a huge risk
