GWT showing completely inaccurate backlinks

The other day I posted a couple of comments over at the WPTavern. I later noticed inside my Google Webmaster Tools, that it's saying I have 562 links coming from WPTavern.

I understand that GWT is not accurate, but geez, 562 links to site when I only posted a couple of comments is ridiculous.

Am I missing something here?

What free tools do you use to see all the sites that are linking to you?

That's seems weird. You can try checking with Open Site Explorer from Moz.

When you post on a site that uses a recent comments widget on EVERY page...your link is on every page if Google happens to crawl the entire site that week.

Once more comments come in and push you off and GoogleBot recrawls the pages and your comment and link are gone, you'll go back to normal.

Rep added for an intelligent comment.

To add a little bit more insight you'll notice that Google only crawled a percentage of the site and listed the links as there are 11,400+ results for wptavern which shows a deflated number of what actually occurred.
Disclaimer: For most businesses a white hat approach is the best long-term strategy, however understanding other techniques and ranking factors used by affiliates can be valuable.
