A competitor of ours who we monitor has recently in the last few weeks got hundreds of new referring domains and thousands of refering pages.

What is going on?

Will they be penalized by Google for this?

It looks like they are selling the domain, so who cares?

Yesterday it was showing as for sale. They must have forgot to pay their registrar bill and renewed it today.

As for them getting penalized... it depends on the links. They might be mostly legit links. Nobody gets penalized just because thousands of new links come in. It depends on the quality of the links.

If they are all spammy links, then yes eventually they will likely get hit by Penguin. That could be months from now though too.

Say; they got all good links not spammy as you said. Even though is it ok to have too many back links within a week or with in very short period of time?

Of course it is okay. What do you think happens when something goes viral?

If you look at the other posts by taposh123 you'll see he isn't reading the threads - he's just spamming his link signature.

I never understand why people are so obsessed with the competition, especially in a situation like this.

Just look at the new links for a minute, of course they will be penalized. Article directory links, link directories and just about everything that you don't want to build.

My advice though is quit worrying when they will be penalized, because they will, and focus on getting your site better. Maybe in the short term they'll succeed but not in the long term.

Double Traffic? Visitors from those backlinks. Makes sense?
Penalty? Just let the google discover those links and in my opinion they will be penalised for UNNATURAL links.

I've seen a case study where a person literally spammed 100,000 untargeted backlinks using scrapebox directly to his money site with mixed results on their keyword improvements.

The sudden jump in backlinks doesn't guarantee any penalty, especially if they are natural or of higher quality

thanks for your help guys really appreciate it. The links they have sudden got seem to be from Chinese websites and other random non related sites.. I shall do as suggest and concentrate on our own site and hopefully they will get penalized.

really? surely it will, isn't that the whole point with google now that if you have spammy links you get penalized? you just have to look at the links they have to know they are unnatural

Look at the TF/CF in majestic, some really strong domains are pointing to it. TF can be hard to manipulate using spam so having that high TF means there are some good domains there and not all spam.

I don't see Google punishing them anytime soon.

There are many websites ranking well by spammy links and they are not penalized until one day Google pull out a new algorithm

I think they followed web master guidelines in proper way and very well in achieving keywords in good position in search engines you follow the same.

This is what i don't understand many of the links they have are from high DA websites but when you go to the actual domain it has nothing to do with anything?

    examples:
    huahui369.com
    kempro.com.tr
    netis.ir
    yje.cn
    xmwinner.cn

Then the other high pr links they have are from article submission sites like prweb and articlesbase. I thought google no longer liked links from article based websites like this?

Imagine when a news story is release on cbn,etc etc a gazillion backlinks as other sites mass distribute and syndicate this content and yet these sites still rank.

If they do get caught for unnatural linking practices then their days are numbered.

A long term strategy would be to have a site wide back linking in place generating multiple diverse back-links. (say that 5 times)
