I don't understand SEO...

This topic confuses me, and apparently it's pretty important.

My site has been live for about a month now, but I'm not sure how I should be trying to optimise it for search engine results.

The site is pretty niche I guess, but without a real specific audience. It's just a blog at this stage. I have strangers from around the world email me a photo and a story about themselves and I draw a portrait of them and upload the drawing along with their story.

Anyway, I'm doing everything I can at this stage to build momentum and grow my audience. So I figured I really should get some advice on SEO as it seems like such an important (and complicated) topic.

My website is Drawing Strangers | A global portfolio of people and their stories
(I hope I'm allowed to post the link. I will remove it if that's not)

Thank you everyone.

Does anyone search for that niche? Looks like something for social traffic.

Any answers you get here are going to be too short to really do any good. Just google 'SEO for beginners' and read 5-6 articles. The same things should show up again and again. Pick one or two things that you can do right away, and make it happen.

Why bother If there's no targeted traffic searching? Have you seen the niche/site? The art is great but I can't imagine anyone searching for something like that type of niche.

Looks like one of those niches where people might be interested If they see it (Facebook), but wouldn't know to search for it. What is the niche even called?

I guess the bigger question is how to monetize.

Focus on something that is the essence of your site. And then find the keyword that describes it. After you have done that, there are a lot of people here at the forum that would be happy to guide you.

Cool site you have there. I have a suggestion though. Maybe you could show the picture first then an option to read? I think the picture should capture the interest first then read about it later. There is something about texts on a white background that kind of makes me less likely to read it.

      Thanks mate.
I have had that criticism a few times now (the text over white background). I played around with a few alternatives, but I couldn't find a solution that I liked yet. I kind of like the clean white background myself, but people have been somewhat divided.
I don't want to hide the text though. I could use a 'snippet' of the text and have a 'read more' button that takes you to the full post. But the essence of this site is really the stories I'm sharing. The drawings are there to catch the eye and showcase my work, but I really want visitors to actually read the stories.
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the time and try to take everything on board. It definitely keeps me thinking of ways to optimise the site.

      Thanks Yukon.
This was my issue with SEO. I just couldn't think why or how people would actually be searching for my site. I don't even know how to classify my site/niche yet.
So I have been using a facebook page and facebook ads to build an audience and direct traffic, which has been reasonably successful. I'm still learning my audience and how to best target ads for likes/website traffic etc...

As for monetizing the site. I have asked that question here previously and had some good responses.
But it is still early days and I am focusing all my attention into building a solid audience first.

IMO, nobody truly understands SEO, it changes way to often, compared to a few years back But, basically, have you tried optimizing your site only for some specific keywords? Your site is new, 1 month old is really new, so maybe focus on optimizing it for specific keywords first, and then try to monetize it.

Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter are what you should be focusing on. If you make a good name and/or brand for yourself down the road that people might search for, then you will want to work on controlling the first page of search results relating to your name and/or brand. Other than that, I would not bother with SEO. Waste of time. And that is from an SEO.

Pinterest should be where it's at. With your type of niche, it's not the sort of thing people would even be searching on Google so SEO isn't really needed.

      Thanks for your response.
I have linked accounts on most popular social media platforms. Most of my focus has been on facebook, as the ability to advertise there has enabled me to grow my audience.
I'm also tweeting and pinning all my blog posts, but I'm new to twitter and pinterest and still not getting any engagement from my posts as I don't have any real followers there.
I need to spend some more time learning how to best use these platforms to build an audience.

Do you have any advice on how to reach people on pinterest.? I'm posting/pinning all my new posts, but I don't think anyone is getting to see them. I'm new to pinterest and don't really understand it yet.

Thanks for all the replies as usual.

  • Well first of all start learning the concepts of find a good keyword.

Its RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. Personally i feel this is the most important step towards the SEO.

When done. Learn a good way of how to write or hire a good content writer so that you can get a good content.

    While that being done.

learn how to set up the perfect ON page.

META TAGS, Headings almost everything. Learn the basics and start using your own mind.

In fact, SEO is outdated and it's a killer for a new one. Social traffic is a good advice, but you need to understand some related rules for each of them. Each of them has different rule, search them online you can get it.

i can't help laughing and feeling sorry for the OP.
    Meta tags?
    Find keywords?
    Social traffic?
Who doesn't know all that? Even kids do.
I think the OP has a great chance of dominating serp for some cool words.
Love, chemistry, happy life, passion, selfhelp etc.
THE STORIES PEOPLE SEND YOU ARE WHAT YOU WANT TO RANK FOR.
How Matt Learned To Live A Happy Life.
How Kathie Became a Successful businesswomen.
Oh Man! I must say you'd rank way more higher than most of the sites out there.
True stories with an artistic touch and life changing lessons.
That is how you want your website to be thought of by people and by search engines as well.

Hey, you have a nice blog there! Hope you'll be able to succeed.

Anyway, your best bet is Facebook, Pinterest and I'm pretty sure some subreddits on Reddit will love your work too, so your traffic should be mainly from social networks. Also, I can't help but see the similarities between your page and, let's say, Humans of New York, so maybe you could comment on this page's photos without sounding spammy and I'm sure you'll see some traffic coming from there too.

    Hope it helps.

No one can truly understand SEO as a whole but we should try to understand what we can. For you website, I think you should try to engage on social media more than SEO. Thing is, we need to let people know about what you are doing. People are not exactly searching for what you are doing right now but with help from social media people will know about what you do and your website and eventually you can gain more audience.

SEO can be really useful when you will go for a ROI and traffic ,you should need to work for on page first for your websites in which you need to take care of specific point just like:

    --Meta Title
    --Meta Description
--H1 Tag(Should be your Main Keywords)
    --Keywords Density
    --Rich and Quality Content
    --Alt Img
    --sitemap
    --robots
    --validator
    --SEO Friendly URL

So finally all factors of On Page needs to monitor and after checking that you need to go for a Good Analytics code and verification of Websites so that you may check the traffic as well any problem or factor which needs to improve

and then, finally you need to built a Links,Make sure about quality and yes Niche websites based on your websites you should have to built the links and avoid the short cut methods-Black hat Technique which may spam your websites and spoil the quality of your websites also .. Just go with Ethical and quality way to improve the websites presence and quality. Let me know if you need any Guidance or any Help

    Thanks

First of all don't think like you cannot understand SEO, It is about getting more traffic and popularity for your website using various techniques and tools over the internet.
Secondly, it is a good niche for SEO, I think you should hire a good SEO service for your website. But if you want to do it by yourself, then start with easy SEO techniques.
Yes, you can also use social media for getting quality and niche related visitors to your website.

Your website and idea is very unique and IMO seo do not help much as there is no obvious keyword to target. My suggestion is do real marketing. Promote website and your idea to social network. Thinking about where is your target audience live.
